Senegal beat Egypt on penalties Again!
The match between Senegal and Egypt went down to penalties once again. Egypt and Senegal contested the AFCON finals last month which went down to penalties as well. Mane took the crucial penalty which got the Lions the cup back then.
Hence, it was deja vu for Egypt as Sadio Mane stepped up and delivered his country a place at the FIFA World Cup. The tie had eventually ended 1-1 over the two legs.
Koulibaly, Salah, Cisse, and Zizo missed the opening four penalties for their respective sides. But Senegal managed to convert their last three penalties while Mostafa Mohamed missed his for Egypt. Senegal eventually won 3-1 on penalties.
Senegal deserved to qualify over two legs
The AFCON champions were the better team over the two legs of the FIFA World Cup qualifier tie against Egypt. The Lions lost out on an equally contested game 1-0 in the first leg.
But Sadio Mane and co showed why they deserved to move on in the second leg. Senegal scored an early goal to level the tie. Overall they had 25 shots compared to just 5 by Egypt. Hence they did deserve to go through over the two legs.
Laser controversy for Egypt!
Controversy marred the second leg of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers tie between Senegal and Egypt. The Egyptian players had lasers directed at their faces to distract them during the game.
The Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawi had lasers directed toward his eyes throughout the game. This became fairly common while he was defending the freekicks and penalties in the game.
Mohamed Salah and the rest of the Egyptian penalty takers suffered the same fate. Twitter was blown up by fans after the game as they suggested that the lasers distracted the Egyptian players throughout the game.
Senegal will travel to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup 2022
Owing to their win against Egypt, Senegal has qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2022. This would be the third time that the African nation would be participating in the tournament. They earlier played in the 2002 and the 2018 editions.
Apart from the Lions, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Ghana qualified for the tournament. Hence, the African population would certainly be expecting a strong showing from their representatives at the FIFA World Cup 2022.
