Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has admitted that Lionel Messi’s return to the Catalan outfit would be incredible on a sentimental level.

Lionel Messi left Barcelona in the summer transfer window of 2021 after his contract with the La Liga side had expired. The Argentine star wanted to stay at Barcelona, but the Catalan outfit could not retain the services of Messi due to financial and structural obstacles.

Lionel Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain in that summer and has been plying his trade for the French heavyweights at club level ever since. Messi’s current contract with PSG is due to expire at the end of June. He has not yet renewed his contract with PSG and there is speculation surrounding his future beyond the end of the current campaign.

Major League Soccer side Inter Miami have been mooted as a potential destination for Lionel Messi. Inter Miami manager Phil Neville has already confirmed their interest in the Argentine. A move back to Barcelona also continues to be speculated on.

Gerard Pique, who is a former teammate of Lionel Messi, admitted that the Argentine’s return to Barcelona would be incredible on a sentimental level.

“Only he knows his future. I think winning the World Cup was his personal dream. It was the title he needed to be considered the best in history,” Gerard Pique told RAC1 [via GOAL].

“Now everyone is convinced of that. Now, everything he decides is to look for where he can be happy. The most normal thing is for him to stay in Europe.”

The former Barcelona defender added: “Barca could be there. For the cules, his return on a sentimental level would be incredible. But it’s his decision. Here, no matter what people say, only his feelings, his motivations are important.”

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been impressive for Paris Saint-Germain in the ongoing 22/23 campaign. The Argentine star has racked up 18 goals and 17 assists for the French club so far this season.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich recently eliminated Paris Saint-Germain from UEFA Champions League at the round of 16 stage. The German behemoths sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a 3-0 aggregate win. However, PSG sits atop the Ligue 1 table and are the favourites to win the league title this season.
