Kylian Mbappe has reportedly been chosen as the captain of France’s national football team following the retirement of Hugo Lloris.

Hugo Lloris announced his retirement from international football after the end of the FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign with France. Raphael Varane, who many thought would succeed Lloris as France captain, also announced his retirement from international football earlier this year.

ESPN reported that France manager Didier Deschamps informed his squad on Monday that Kylian Mbappe will be their new captain. Deschamps held discussions with Mbappe on Monday at Clairefontaine, the France team training centre. He also spoke with Antoine Griezmann, who was another candidate for the role of France captain.

Antoine Griezmann will reportedly become the vice-captain of France’s national football team.

France, meanwhile, finished as runners-up in FIFA World Cup 2022 after suffering a defeat to Argentine in a penalty shootout in the final. Kylian Mbappe was sensational for France in Qatar 2022, and he bagged a hat-trick in the final against Argentina. Mbappe racked up eight goals in seven appearances for France at Qatar 2022.

Since making his France national football team debut in 2017, Kylian Mbappe has so far appeared in 66 games for them and has amassed a respectable total of 36 goals.

France will kick off their UEFA EURO Qualifiers campaign with a match against the Netherlands. The game will kick off at 1:15 am Indian Standard Time on March 25.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has been impressive for Paris Saint-Germain in the ongoing 22/23 campaign. The Frenchman has racked up 31 goals and eight assists for PSG in 33 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

However, PSG have been far from its best in the current campaign. They have already been knocked out of both the Champions League and French Cup. They remain in contention for Ligue 1, where they lead the race. But they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Rennes in their most recent fixture, which reduced their lead at the top to seven points.
