Football News: Mohamed Salah attacked by Senegal fans

Football News: Mohamed Salah’s penalty which failed to find the net ended Egypt’s run for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Senegal again beat Egypt on penalties in their World Cup play-off match. Senegal recently beat Egypt for the AFCON title, that match also went on to the penalties with a win for Senegal.

Egypt was ahead by a goal after the first leg but gave up the lead after an own goal by Hamdi Fathi in the fourth minute of the second leg. The match then went on to the penalties as both the teams failed to score another goal. 

Senegal defeated Egypt 3-1 on penalties to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, the Senegal fans present inside the stadium were making it difficult for Egyptian players to focus on the game.

The Senegal fans were constantly hurling abuses at the Egyptian players, were shining lasers in their eyes, and even pelted stones at Salah after the match was over. Mohamed Salah was also confronted by a Senegal fan initially as they invaded the pitch to celebrate Senegal’s victory.

The Egyptian Football Association claimed that their team and particularly Mohamed Salah was subjected to racial slurs from Senegal fans. Mohamed Salah misses his spot-kick in the shootout because of the lasers that the Senegal fans were shining in his eyes.

As Salah made his way to the tunnel after the match, fans threw several objects from the stands. They aimed missiles at him and pelted stones on the Liverpool forward. He marched into the dressing room in disgust after his side’s penalty shootout defeat.

Mohamed Salah’s security team did all they could have done to protect and shield him. The supporters had a clear shot at the Liverpool star in the tunnel area. There was a lot of footage that shows how fans target Egyptians with laser lights during the match.

Adding to Salah’s misery was his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane’s kick which sealed the match in favor of Senegal. Mohamed Salah was seen having his head protected by officials as they escorted him into the dressing room. Senegal fans created vile scenes appearing to throw missiles at him.

Senegal is now qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2022. They will head to Qatar ahead this year. The Pharaohs tasted defeated twice this year by the hands of Senegal. Both times it was by a penalty shootout.
