Paul Merson has said Manchester United ‘downed tools’ in their humiliating defeat to Liverpool in Premier League last week.
The Red Devils, who have been largely impressive under Erik ten Hag, traveled to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the English top flight. Manchester United had gone into the game on the back of four consecutive wins, but they were at the receiving end of a heavy thrashing at Anfield.
Liverpool romped their way into a comfortable 7-0 victory over Manchester United as the Red Devils suffered their heaviest defeat of the season. Manchester United conceded just one goal in the first half, but an awful performance in a disastrous second half saw Erik ten Hag’s men let in six more.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Paul Merson said Manchester United downed their tools against Liverpool and that they gave up against the Merseyside outfit.
Manchester United downed tools and gave up against Liverpool: Paul Merson

“They downed tools. They gave up. I hate saying that but it was a complete and utter mess. The name of the game is to make sure this doesn’t undo everything – it’s about how quickly you bounce back. Good teams bounce back,” Paul Merson told Sky Sports.
Paul Merson also said Manchester United should not have lost the game the way they eventually did.

“There are ways of losing football matches, sometimes you’re unlucky. But you don’t lose like that. They’ve got top-quality players and it shouldn’t have unravelled like that. Liverpool had United on the floor and they wanted to keep them down there.”
Despite the defeat to Liverpool, Manchester United continue to sit third in the Premier League points table. But that defeat has dealt a heavy blow to Manchester United’s slim hopes of a title challenge.
The Red Devils are now 14 points behind table-toppers Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title. Even if Manchester United win the one game they have in hand over Arsenal, they could only reduce the gap on the Gunners to 11 points.
Meanwhile, Manchester United will be aiming to bounce back after their disastrous performance at Anfield. They take on Real Betis in the Europa League round of 16 in their next match.
