Lionel Messi was helpless and desperate in the Champions League round of 16 second leg clash with Bayern Munich although he showed glimpses of his extra class, according to Philipp Lahm.

Bayern Munich knocked Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League in the round of 16 as the German side sealed their place in the next stage of the competition with a 3-0 aggregate win.

It was a disappointing end to Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League 22/23 campaign. Despite boasting a star-studded squad, the French heavyweights could not even score a goal across the two legs in their round-of-16 clash with Bayern Munich.

Philipp Lahm also said in the second leg against Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain did not show anything of the class they should have given the outstanding players they have.

Messi also showed his extra class in moments in Munich. But his skill is used without purpose, aim or direction,” Philipp Lahm told Sport BILD [via GOAL]. “Individuals at PSG just don’t know how to score a goal together and what to contribute to it. Messi was helpless and desperate.

Philipp Lahm said Paris Saint-Germain were a total disappointment in the second leg in Munich, but he was not surprised by what he saw.

He said: “PSG can make you sad. In Munich, you didn’t see anything of the class that this team should actually have due to their outstanding players

They were a total disappointment, on the one hand. On the other hand, it wasn’t a surprise, because it happens all the time that PSG are knocked out of the Champions League early.

Paris Saint-Germain have not lived up to the expectations in the current campaign, but they will be aiming to end the season by lifting the Ligue 1 title. PSG are the defending champions and lead the race for the title.

PSG sits atop the Ligue 1 points with 66 points in 28 matches so far this season. They enjoy a seven-point lead over second-placed Marseille, who have points 59 points in 28 matches. PSG slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Rennes in Ligue 1 in their most recent fixture. They will resume their campaign after the March international break.
