Real Madrid’s squad depth has been an issue for them this season. Los Blancos have struggled in the absence of their star players this season. Karim Benzema’s absence has often been felt by Real Madrid this season.
The No.9 spot is not the only area where they have struggled this season. The right-back position has also been an issue for the club for some time. According to Fichajes (via Hard Tackle), Los Blancos are interested in signing Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese international currently plays for Bayern Munich on loan from Manchester City.
Dani Carjval has primarily played in the right-back position. However, he has been able to replicate his last season’s form this season. The Spaniard has been inconsistent this season. At times he has played well but many times he hasn’t been at his best.
In the present Real Madrid squad Lucas Vázquez and Álvaro Odriozola are his deputies. However, they haven’t been able to make use of their opportunities. Vazquez is not a natural right back while Odriozola is not trusted by Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid missed out on Cancelo in January
In the January transfer window of 2023, Los Blancos had a chance to sign the Portuguese. However, they did not sign the former Juventus star. It was believed that they wanted to give a chance to youngster Vinicius Tobias. But that does not seem to be the plan right now.
Also, in the January transfer window, Real Madrid did not have the finances to sign him. Thus he eventually moved to Bayern Munich on loan. The Bavarians signed him on loan with an option to buy him for €70 million in the summer.
He primarily left Manchester City due to a lack of playing time. However, it looks like he is facing a similar issue at Allianz Arena as well. It does not look like they will sign him this summer. Julian Nagelsmann initially gave him a few starts but lately, Cancelo hasn’t been preferred in big Champions League games.
Now, Los Blancos want to use this opportunity to bring him to Santiago Bernabeu. It will be difficult for them due to a lack of finances. Not only this they have to sign other players for different positions as well.

Other Alternatives for Real Madrid?
It will be difficult for Los Blancos to find a fullback with the quality of Joao Cancelo. However, he will come at a premium as well. Potentially Los Blancos could also enter into a similar agreement to Bayern Munich.
They could sign him on a loan in the summer on loan and then pay the money later. But it will be difficult to convince Manchester City about the agreement. They will also have to find new a replacement for the Portuguese international.
Thus there is a possibility that Los Blancos will have to look for alternatives. Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong name has been mentioned as an option. While Sporting Lisbon fullback Pedro Porro has also been linked to big names across Europe.
It is also possible that Real Madrid continue with the present setup only. Dani Carjval is in his prime at the age of 31 years. While Lucas Vázquez is an experienced player and over the years he has been trusted by both Zidane and Ancelotti.
