Barcelona manager Xavi said they do not yet feel like La Liga champions but admitted their defeat of Real Madrid in their most recent fixture was an important step for them.

Barcelona and Real Madrid squared off in a La Liga fixture and it was the Catalan outfit who emerged triumphant. After Real Madrid took the lead through a Ronald Araujo own goal, Barcelona scored two goals to pull off a comeback and earn all three points.

The 2-1 win over Real Madrid has also helped Barcelona go 12 points clear of Carlo Ancelotti and co. in the race for the La Liga title. Barcelona now have 68 points from 26 matches in La Liga so far this season. Real Madrid, who are the defending champions and who occupies the second spot, have 56 points from 26 matches.

Barcelona have now left Real Madrid further behind in the race for the La Liga title. But Xavi insists Barcelona do not yet feel like they are the champions-elect.

Xavi also said Barcelona were better than Real Madrid and that the result of the game was fair. “We were better than Real Madrid. The result is fair. The only thing that was unfair was their 0-1 lead,” the Barcelona manager said.

Don’t forget where we come from. Last year, it was us who were 12 points behind.

Xavi also said he was surprised Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said they have doubts about Marco Asensio’s disallowed goal. Asensio thought he had sent Real Madrid ahead in the 81st minute of the match, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Clear offside. I’m surprised Ancelotti said what he did because there’s no debate,” Xavi said. “If Asensio’s goal had counted, that result would not have been fair. After Kessie scored, I felt that the win was fair and deserved.

Barcelona will take on Elche in a La Liga fixture in their next game. After that, they will once again square off with Real Madrid, this time in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. Barcelona won the first leg 1-0 and have an edge heading into the second leg.
