According to a recent promotional event at Malaysia footballing icon, Ronaldinho wishes that he had stayed alongside Messi in the Nou Camp for a longer period of time. The Brazilian played a major part in Messi’s career at Barcelona. Regarded as Messi’s mentor at Barcelona, it was Ronaldinho who assisted Messi’s first goal for the club.

Now the two time World Player of the Year has seen the Argentine collect five Ballon d’Ors and countless other records. Furthermore, Ronaldinho claims that Messi is even better than Portuguese rival Cristiano Ronaldo At the time when Ronaldinho was at his peak at Barcelona, Messi was a young 19-year-old. Graduating through the ranks at La Masia, Messi is now one of the greatest the game has ever seen.

The two made a fearsome combination in the Barca attack along with Samuel Eto’o. However, in 2008 Ronaldinho departed for Italian club AC Milan. Ronaldinho said,“I didn’t get enough time with him, he was very young. I’d love to take to the pitch with him one more time.” When asked whether he prefers the Argentine or Ronaldo, Ronaldinho responded, “Messi. I would have loved to continue playing alongside him.”

Ronaldinho now hopes that Barcelona can achieve the treble with Messi leading the charge for the Blaugrana. Speaking about his former club PSG, Ronaldinho also suggests that it won’t take long for the French club to achieve European glory. A club which is known for spending on big players, the former World Cup winner knows what it takes to win the Champions League having won it in 2006.

“In football, even when you sign great players you need some time to put together a winning team,” Ronaldinho does not have any regrets having won every trophy a football player dreams of achieving. “I ended my playing career having fully realized all the dreams I had; individually and with the teams, I played for. I’m a satisfied man.”

Author’s take:

Ronaldinho is truly one of the greats of the game. And so is Leo Messi. Moreover, he has taken the mantle from Ronaldinho and is still continuing to propel Barcelona to greatness. It would be a dream to see these two legends linking up on the final third of the pitch, for any football fan.
