The Red Devils have been heavily linked with Mesut Ozil in the past few weeks, but the former English midfielder, Ray Wilkins has suggested an alternative for the German international.
Mesut Ozil’s future continues to swing around uncertainties as there is no clear picture of his transfer. The former United and Chelsea player has called him unsuitable for Mourinho’s work ethic. Wilkins has instead suggested Manchester United to target Willian.
The German’s contract is set to expire in June 2018. The clubs like Barcelona and Manchester United are rumored to make a move in January.
Ray Wilkins has criticized Arsenal and Wenger for not selling Sanchez and Ozil in the summer. The Englishman thinks it may cost almost the Gunners £120m. The football pundit then suggested United not to go for Ozil and instead target Willian, a player Mourinho has previously worked with.
“Mesut Ozil won’t go to Old Trafford because he doesn’t have the work ethic that Mourinho looks for in his players.” Wilkins told Sporting Bet.
“I actually see Willian as being the likely player to head to Old Trafford. Jose is an enormous admirer of Willian and he would be a special signing for United, but I pray that Chelsea don’t let him go.”
Not a Mourinho Guy?
The football-pundit pointed at Ozil’s weakness while defending, which makes him an unsuitable player for Mourinho’s team.
“In the Premier League, you’re expected to work hard defensively for your team, and I don’t think Mesut does that enough.”
“Against Spurs, he was excellent in doing that, tracking Christian Eriksen, but he needs to do that every game, it can’t be one game in 20.”
Wilkins also expressed his views about David Luiz’s situation at Chelsea while also calling him a non-Mourinho player.
“I don’t think Jose Mourinho will have David. He wants to keep clean sheets and beat opposition one or two nil and with Luiz, he will struggle to do that.”
Mesut Ozil has shown no signs of a contract extension at Arsenal. The player is rumoured to be waiting for the clubs to contact him before January. The Brazilian winger, on the other hand, has been a squad player for Antonio Conte. Willian has scored 4 goals for the blues, most of them coming off the bench.
Jose Mourinho is a complicated man and you can’t really tell which player he really wants. Wilkins might be right here about Ozil’s defensive problems. But the German can be a great addition to United, taking the creative load off Pogba.
Also, in my opinion, Chelsea will not let Willian go. The Blues have to fight for top 4 and also face Barcelona in Europe. So they are going to need depth in their squad.
