Liverpool ended the week in the second position, after Manchester city thrashed a lackluster Chelsea side at the Etihad stadium on Sunday.
As of now, Manchester city lead the standings on goal difference with 65 points from 27 games. Liverpool are behind the Cityzens on goal difference, but do have a game in hand. Liverpool had moved to the top of the table after their 3-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday. However, their stay at the top of the table lasted barely 24 hours as City pegged them back again.
Next up, Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to Manchester to take on a revitalized and reborn Manchester United side at the Old Trafford. The result in this game could have huge implications on both sides’ respective campaigns for entirely different reasons. Manchester City, meanwhile, lock horns with the Blues again in the Carabao Cup Final. Former Liverpool and Scotland star Graeme Souness revealed what his former employers need to do if they are to win the league this season.
“City have put a marker down. Liverpool
aregoing to have to win every single game to win this league. City havethe bit between their teeth right now. The way Liverpool beat Bournemouth [on Saturday] doesn’t confirm they’re back at their best
“But that result for City [against Chelsea] has confirmed after their hiccup, they’re saying: ‘We’re banged at it, this is how we’re going to finish the season’. If that is their form between now and the end of the season, Liverpool
haveto win every game. That’s what they’re looking at.
“City today have won 6-0 and you’re thinking, with it being nearly 50/50 in possession, were they that good? Yeah, I think they were in the areas that mattered.
“When they came to defend, they defended properly as a unit and individually. Up front, they were getting goals, albeit through some mistakes from Chelsea.
havehad their rollicking off their manager and they’ve had their points dropped. They’re going to take some stopping if that’s their mood between now and the end.”
Liverpool are engaged in only the Premier league and Champions league while City are active in 4 competitions. So, Liverpool certainly have more time on their side to rest their key players for the big games. At the moment, the Reds just need to take one game at a time and not worry about City’s results.
