Real Madrid are into third consecutive Champions League final where they face Liverpool and have received the backing of one of their former superstars

Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas believes it would a third straight victory for his former side. The Porto goalkeeper has come out in support of his boyhood club, where he spent 16 years before eventually departing in 2015. The 36-year old was in complete awe of the team for this historic run, and feels they are almost there. He said, “I hope Madrid wins its 13th European crown to continue being the club it is, the best in the world.”

Casillas, winner of three European crowns as a Galactico – in 2000, 2002 and 2014, couldn’t help but the marvel at the might of this team and also goes to reveal how he still follows the club games from abroad. “It’s incredible! They have an amazing squad. They eliminated PSG, Juventus… now all they have to do is to put the cherry on the cake.
“I continue to be a Madrid fan and I’m enjoying [watching] this Real Madrid,” he divulged.
Real Madrid take on Liverpool in the May 26 final in Kiev. Having won the previous two editions, Zinedine Zidane’s side are aiming to become the first club to win it thrice in a row on two different occasions.
The former Spain skipper also spoke honestly how the continued success post his departure makes his envious. However, having been given the platform at Madrid, he’s also full of gratitude towards his former side.
“I don’t miss [Real] Madrid. These are stages that you have to go through. Madrid gave everything to me, the opportunity to win top titles and go to the national team. I will be eternally grateful to Madrid,” he further added.
Casillas made over 700 appearances for the club, before departing unceremoniously for Portuguese outfit Porto, as Los Blancos ended trophyless that year and Casillas was in the eye of the storm for numerous high-profile errors throughout the campaign.

Author’s Take

It’s quite clear that despite the low-profile exit he was pushed to, Casillas still has Real Madrid in his heart. The Spaniard’s generous puffery on his former side really means something, and deserves respect, considering the circumstances under which he was forced out of the club and without the grand farewell he deserved for all thsoe years of unblemished service.
