Formula 1 news: Another day, another buy for Aston Martin it seems. Man, Lawrence Stroll must have a big, big bank balance, no? Good for him, though. So, the latest news is that Aston Martin has signed Mercedes’ Aero Chief of Chiefs, Eric Blandin.
The man in question hails from England and has had plenty of experience with Mercedes & Aston’s rivals in the past. Most notably, Eric was heading Red Bull’s Aero scenes from July of 2005 to December of 2009.
After his Red Bull tenure, he quickly jumped ships to Ferrari. Eric headed the Italian squad’s Aero from January 2010 to April 2011. A month later, he got signed by Mercedes as Brackley’s Principal Aerodynamicist from May 2011 to August 2017. He then got promoted to the Chief of Chief’s role in September 2017.
Safe to say, Eric has a lot of experience under his belt. Positive news for Aston Martin as the team begins its quest to become a World Championship contender.
Formula 1 news: Eric is one of the many new hires for Aston
On Eric’s signing, an Aston spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Eric Blandin will begin working for Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team next year. His exact start date is not yet confirmed. The transition from Mercedes AMG F1 Team to ourselves will be an amicable one.”
It is also understood that Eric will be placed on a gardening leave for a brief period before he joins his new employer, Aston Martin, next year.
Worth noting that Eric is not the only high-profile signing from Aston Martin. Several other high-profile people too, are all set to wear to the Aston green in due course.
Formula 1 news: Who are the other high-profile people?
Starting off with former McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh. Martin is a renowned name in the world of Formula 1. He was previously associated with McLaren for roughly 25 years and succeeded Ron Dennis as the team’s boss in 2008.
Whitmarsh is currently working for Aston Martin Performance Technologies as its Group Chief Executive Officer wherein he will oversee the F1 team’s operations.
Next on the list is ex-Alfa Romeo Chief Designer, Luca Furbatto. Luca was appointed by the British outfit as its Engineering Director, with Andrew Green, who previously held Luca’s post, being promoted to the Chief Technical Officer role.
Furbatto also has several years of experience under his belt as he has worked with McLaren for a decade, then at Manor and Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) before signing the deal with Sauber in 2017.
Luca, just like Eric Blandin, will start his work for Aston from next year. Following Luca’s hiring, AM then announced the arrival of Red Bull’s Head of Aero, Dan Fallows, as its new Technical Director.
Dan has been with Red Bull since 2006, and is said to be an integral part in the ‘Sebastian Vettel era’ where the German, along with the Milton Keynes-based outfit, won four championships on the trot from 2010-2013.
Although he won’t be joining Aston anytime soon because, contractual reasons! That said, Otmar Szafnauer is looking forward to Dan joining the team as early as possible: “He’s a great addition to our team. He’s a like-minded individual, a high performer. He’s won world championships, he knows Seb, so we look forward to Dan joining. It’s just a matter of the timing.”
