Formula 1 News: Red Bull envisioned a dream partnership between Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, who could compete against Mercedes. However, fate retrograded, and Ricciardo refused the new policies of the Milton-Keynes-based outfit.

In response, Red Bull thought the 2016 GP2 champion Pierre Gasly would fulfil the job and promoted him from Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) to the primary team. But, a series of poor performances by him made Red Bull revert the decision.

And hired Red Bull academy’s other sensation Alex Albon to replace Gasly; though Albon lived a bit longer in Red Bull, he met the same end. However, the four-time world champions were criticized for their poor management and for prioritizing Verstappen too much.

The failure of the two drivers was blamed on Red Bull with Gasly overperforming with AlphaTauri. While Albon will be competing for Williams from 2022 onwards to replacing Mercedes bound George Russell.

Formula 1: Red Bull accepts the blame

After several accusations for spoiling the career of two drivers in his team, Team Principal Christian Horner has accepted the fault. According to him, both drivers succumbed to the extreme pressure environment Red Bull possesses in F1.

I think he just gives us that experience,” Horner said on the Beyond the Grid podcast while talking about Perez. “He’s got 10 years worth of experience. He’s got an ability to manage the tyres within a race that is second to none. It just brings a different dynamic into the line-up.

Both Pierre and Alex are tremendously gifted drivers, but the timing just wasn’t right. Then the pressuring environment that we have, and the expectation, very tough for them,” he added.

Now, Perez is leading the charge behind Verstappen, and so far, even he has struggled in between. However, Turkey’s performance may overturn his fortunes in Red Bull and motivate him to contribute further in Red Bull’s pursuit for the championship.

Formula 1: Sergio Perez is delivering

There have been instances where Perez came to rescue Red Bull, especially in Azerbaijan and Turkey. The two crucial performances kept Mercedes on their toes against Red Bull in the following season.

Also, at Azerbaijan, Hamilton failed to establish a lead over Verstappen, as Perez clinched the win himself over there. Therefore, Horner feels Perez is checking all the boxes of their requirements of a deputy driver in the team.

I think he brings the dynamic in the fight that we have with Mercedes. That’s starting to pay dividends. You saw that in the French Grand Prix, and also Azerbaijan getting his first victory.

The way he fended off Lewis, Lewis probably would have won that race had it not been for Sergio so he’s absolutely delivering,” the Red Bull team boss concluded.
