Formula 1: Why did Ferrari had to make last minute changes?
Ferrari started the test but it had to revise plans shortly after because of the uncertainty over the rules. Efforts are being made by Both FIA and teams to end this confusion and finalize the rules for the 2022 season but all this has to go through a formal procedure by World Motor Sport Council.
Ferrari swapped their S21 from SF71H In order to be safe. The previous rules are for testing 2018, 2019and 2022 cars. So Ferrari didn’t take the risk because of the uncertainty. Alpha Tauri has also scheduled testing on Tuesday in the 2020 AT-01.
Teams have asked FIA to allow them to test 2021 in such tests so they get some advantage than no advantage. Ferrari can test with their 2018, 2019, and 2020 cars. They have asked FIA to get clarification on the 2021 car.
Though according to a recent rule, teams are restricted from testing with a car that was built with last year’s rule. Such a car will be recognized as current if it complies with the Technical Regulations of the championship or with previous years’ championships.
The other rule which is there only allows the use of cars which are two years old. It states that the design has to be in compliance with the technical regulations of three previous calendar years.
The changes in the rule book were done in order to not repeat the mistakes of the previous season. FIA is making sure that every team follows the rule so that its a fair match.
