Formula 1 News: In F1 testing, Gasly had a “fun battle” with Hamilton

Formula 1 News: Pierre Gasly was "surprised" to fight with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton during F1 testing in Bahrain

Formula 1 News: Pierre Gasly, though “surprised” to fight against Lewis Hamilton in Bahrain pre-testing last week, is optimistic that following other cars would be easier this year.

Following a revision of the regulations aimed to decrease the gap and make it easier for cars to follow each other, F1‘s new technical era begins this weekend in Bahrain.

Drivers have mostly praised the adjustments so far, saying that they have made it easier to follow after having several opportunities in testing to run alongside other competitors.

Gasly spent many laps dueling with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on the final day of testing in Bahrain, providing them a taste of what it felt like to be so close to another car.

Pierre Gasly stated that he did not anticipate being able to battle Hamilton in such a manner, but he found solace that the changes have been for the better as a result of the fight. He commented he was quite shocked to be fighting with Lewis for a couple of circuits, it was “entertaining.”

He said it was also intriguing to follow and acquire some statistics and get a sense of what it was like to follow other cars. The driver believes it is superior to last year, which gives him a reason to be hopeful about the season’s racing. He said that they realize they have a lot of work to do on their end to improve the performance and the car balance.

Despite bringing several modifications for the W13 chassis, Hamilton and Mercedes seemed to struggle throughout the second Formula 1 test in Bahrain. Hamilton stated that he did not believe Mercedes was in a position to compete for race victories right now.

While Hamilton agreed that following other cars was simpler this year, he did not agree that there were many sections where they felt worse than in Formula 1 2021. Lewis Hamilton stated he thinks that everyone is “sliding around.” He added that they all appear to have less grip than previously, and this year’s tires are worse. What he discovered there is physically a lot easier in the long term.

However, on the plus side, following after another car appears to be a lot better so far, which he believes is a step in the right direction. He is hoping that at some point, they’ll get better tires. Or, that they’ll operate better in locations where it’s not as hot. But, he is confident the car will improve throughout the year and reach a better state.
