Formula 1 News: On Saturday, in the dying seconds of the Qatar GP qualifying, Pierre Gasly’s tyre burst on the kerb. Horror struck Red Bull as yellow flags waved, followed by green.

Max Verstappen decided to give all to his car’s pace, with Lewis Hamilton already recording the fastest time on the clock. It was the only chance for Red Bull to accomplish a pole in Qatar, which could give an opportunity to Red Bull to win against the powerful Mercedes in Losail.

However, this series of incidents didn’t go well with the FIA. They summoned Verstappen on Sunday to decide his actions in Q3. It led to the strenuous task of the stewards holding discussions with the three guilty drivers- Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz.

As every minute passed by, the penalty seemed inevitable. Mercedes probably couldn’t hold its urge to relish the moment. As Hamilton at the pole, and Verstappen distant from him, wouldn’t have been a piece of better news for the Briton.

Formula 1 News: Max Verstappen penalized

With the deadline to announce the grid order was looming near. FIA had an obligation to notify the verdict as soon as possible. And they did it by stabbing the hopes of Red Bull to maintain their lead in the drivers’ championship.

The governing body decided that Verstappen would serve a five-place grid penalty during the race. Therefore, from his P2 finish on Saturday, he spirals down to the P7 start for the race. Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas received a three-place grid penalty and will start the race from P5. Due to Verstappen’s penalty, he got a relaxation by a spot.

The decision reads: “The driver acknowledged his awareness of the presence of Car 10 on the right side of the track. Having seen a disabled car, it is reasonable to expect, as was the case of the driver of Car 55, that there was a potential danger.

“Red Bull argued that as the light panel wasn’t displayed and had been turned off he shouldn’t get a penalty, but the team also never told him the track had gone yellow and then gone clear. Stewards had “sympathy” but said it’s driver’s responsibility to take action.

Formula 1 News: No action on Carlos Sainz

Meanwhile, Sainz remained the only driver against whom the stewards took no action. The ruling stated that the Spaniard didn’t see a yellow flag. However, he did know that Car 10 was stationary on the right of the pit straight and therefore assumed that there was the probability that he was in a yellow flag.

Therefore, he reduced his pace considerably. Therefore, no action against Sainz was taken by the governing body. With this ruling, Gasly sees himself promoted to the front row. The Frenchman will race on the soft tyres to get an advantage.

As Hamilton will start the race on the medium compound tyres. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris would be starting from the second-row. Even the second-row duo will be starting the race on the soft tyres.

This verdict leaves Red Bull to only vie against the midtable teams before challenging Mercedes. But will they manage to cath Hamilton after such a deficit? The answer was evident on Saturday only.
