Gary Neville Defends Erik ten Hag’s Decision Not to Use Cristiano Ronaldo vs Man City

Gary Neville has defended Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag after he chose not to bring on Cristiano Ronaldo in their match against Man City.

Man Utd returned to action after the September international break by taking a short trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Man City. Pep Guardiola’s side, though, were too good for Ten Hag’s men.

Man City cruised to a 6-3 win over Man Utd in that match. Both Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks for Man City as they inflicted a heavy defeat on their local rivals.

Man City were leading by four goals at half-time. Antony pulled one back for Man Utd in the 56th minute. However, Man City re-established a four-goal cushion in the 64th minute as Erling Haaland scored his third goal of the match. Foden then bagged his hat-trick, scoring in the 73rd minute to make it 6-1. Man Utd, though, reduced the deficit to three goals courtesy of a brace from Anthony Martial.

Speaking after the match, Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag explained why he left Cristiano Ronaldo as an unused substitute against Man City.

Ronaldo had not made it to the starting XI and watched on from the stands as Man City thrashed Man Utd. Ten Hag explained that he did not bring Ronaldo off the bench out of respect.

Gary Neville defended Ten Hag’s decision, admitting bringing Ronaldo on at 4-0 or 6-1 would have been an insult.

I get his point, to be honest. Bringing him on at 4-0 and 6-1 would have been an insult. ETH may not have delivered the line correctly and probably would have been best not to say it. (although I like his honesty),” Neville tweeted.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has not had a great start to the 22/23 season. He has so far featured in eight games for the Red Devils and has only scored once.

Only three of Ronaldo’s appearances have been as a starter – the rest have been off the bench. He has seemingly lost his place in the Man Utd starting XI.

Meanwhile, the defeat to Man City leaves Man Utd sixth in the Premier League points table.
