The former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka has been desperate to leave the club. He has been wanting to leave the Gunners ever since last summer.
Granit Xhaka has been a regular starter under the current Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta. He made a total of 45 appearances in all competitions in the last season. In the Premier League, he made 31 appearances last season.
Granit Xhaka joined Arsenal from the Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach for a reported fee of £30 million in 2016. He had been quite highly rated in the Bundesliga. But at Arsenal, the Switzerland captain has not been very impressive, barring a few performances.
Granit Xhaka nearing Arsenal exit
According to a report from Calciomercato, Granit Xhaka is close to leaving Arsenal for AS Roma. Only a few details are left for the deal to be completed. The Italian media outlet has also reported that Xhaka will join the Roma squad next week.
Both the clubs have agreed upon a fee of £17.11 million for the transfer. At first, Roma did not agree upon a fee for more than £15 million. But Arsenal stood their ground and both the clubs found a middle ground on the fee of £17.11 million.
While Roma had agreed on personal terms with Granit Xhaka before itself. Now the club can take a sigh of relief since their new manager, Jose Mourinho, had demanded for the transfer.
Jose Mourinho is said to be the driving force behind the transfer. Mourinho is a huge admirer of Granit Xhaka and he has closely looked at Xhaka from his time at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Even as a football pundit, he always spoke highly of the 28-year-old.
Arsenal to incur losses on the sale
Arsenal are all set to incur losses on the sale of Granit Xhaka. The Gunners signed him for £30 million from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016. But they are reportedly going to sell him for £17.11 million to AS Roma.
That brings Arsenal to a loss of £13 million after the sale. Even after Xhaka’s brilliant performance in the Euro 2020 tournament, Arsenal have not been able to raise his price. Arsenal’s recent transfer policy has always been under fire for the losses they keep on incurring. The majority of their transfer business has always been on loss.
Arsenal’s handling of the transfer saga regarding Alexis Sanchez was highly criticized. Sanchez was in his peak and he was producing brilliant performances for Arsenal, but the Gunners’ handling of the transfer let the Chilean slide by for nothing in a swap deal with Manchester United. Both Arsenal and Manchester United regret the swap deal that worked for none.
Similarly Mesut Ozil had left the club for nothing recently. There are many examples regarding Arsenal’s poor business and sales. Even though the club has done a lot of changes in the management, thus bringing in new faces. But it is the same old story.
The Gunners would quickly want to sort the mess regarding their businesses because Arsenal has been already making huge losses consecutively due to their absence from Champions League for quite some time and Europa League now.
