Liverpool and Manchester United were reportedly interested in signing the young defender but it looks like a decision has been made on his future.
Liverpool’s and Manchester United’s hopes of signing young Netherlands International and Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt have been given a blow as reports suggest a move to FC Barcelona is almost done.
Matthijs de Ligt has been impressive for Ajax this season and his performance has helped attract numerous clubs. Liverpool and Manchester United were also interested in the player but reports suggest FC Barcelona and the player have agreed on terms.
de Ligt has delivered on big stages this season, scoring goals in high-profile games. He scored against Juventus in the second-leg to send the Italian giants out of the Champions League. The young defender also scored a header goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg but an inspired performance from the Spurs and a hat-trick from Moura put end to Ajax’s fairytale journey.
His agent Mino Raiola has reportedly met FC Barcelona representatives to close in on a deal before other clubs make a push.
The defender recently admitted that there have been negotiations but said no agreement has reached. He said, “I don’t know yet. There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement.”
Manchester United were another club linked with a player. United need some serious reinforcements ahead of next after performing dismally at the end of the current season.
Will de Ligt join FC Barcelona? or can Liverpool convince the player to join? or will Manchester United, set to play in Europa League next season, do whatever it takes to sign the defender?
Signing de Ligt would have been a great addition to the Liverpool squad but Jurgen Klopp’s side already has a world-class defensive department, headed by another Netherlands defender Virgil Van Dijk. Another central defender Joe Gomez has also been equally impressive for the side along with Virgil.
For de Ligt, a move to FC Barcelona has long been speculated. FC Barcelona earlier signed another Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong who will join them after this season ends.
