Shivam Dube and Varun Chakaravarthy were the most expensive players for IPL 2019 auction held today. Here’s all you need to know about them.
IPL 2019 auction was full of shocks and surprises. Some got sold at unexpected prices while some are still waiting for their fate to turn. There were some unfamiliar names who stole the show. Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube turned out to be the most expensive ones with bagging an amount of 8.4 crores and 5 crores respectively.
Varun Chakravarthy was a sensation this year, by showing some exceptionally great performance in the Tamil Nadu premier league. Also known as the “mystery spinner” Varun was at times difficult to read and often fooled around letting the batsmen give up their wickets behind the stumps.
Chakravarthy’s name was highly unexpected, hence led many people to go surprised, as he made to Kings XI Punjab with a whopping amount of 8.4 crores which was 42 times of 20 lakhs which was his base price.
Varun had an action-packed cricketing career. He began as a wicket-keeper batsman at a mere age of 13 and there on had no looking back. After making his name in school cricket, He studied architecture at the SRM University in Chennai and worked in a private firm for a couple of years before making a comeback to cricket.
Before making a comeback to cricket, he played for a number of clubs but had to stop again due to his injury. However many assumed he won’t be able to play cricket ever again the determined Turk once again made a return to the pitch and this time as a mystery spinner.
He bowled at the nets for teams like CSK and KKR IPL 2018 and in one such session, he got noticed by the video analyst of KKR Mr. AR Srikkanth. He got an opportunity to spend 10 days with the KKR where he observed names like Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav which helped him to better his techniques.
Later on, he went on to impress the Madurai Panthers in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) with nine wickets at an economy rate of 4.7. He also had trials with Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2019 auctions and expected to bag a contract.
On the other hand, Shivam Dube is a medium pace all-rounder from Mumbai. He is a right-arm bowler and a left-handed batter. He was known for his consistent performances in the ongoing domestic season. However, despite his big-hitting abilities, his name didn’t quite revolve in the grounds of Mumbai in age-group cricket.
Though Dube helped his school Hansraj Morarji win the under-14 Giles Shield, he missed five years of age-group cricket due to personal reasons. However, in under-23 cricket that he made a strong impression that insisted his promotion to Mumbai’s senior side. And in the year 2018, not only did he become an ace and dependable batsman for Mumbai, but he also improved majorly as a bowler. He was consistent and disciplined with his variations, which played a massive part in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy win.
He hit Pravin Tambe for 5 sixes in an over in the Mumbai T20 league and recreated the same in a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda’s Swapnil Singh a day before the auction.
