Strongly linked to the Liga giants, as well as Manchester United and Juventus, the Ajax captain has indicated he may join the Spanish champions.
Like with many clubs in recent times that have excited with their style of play and young up and coming players the fear has been that after one brilliant season the Ajax side would be split up.
Earlier this season Barcelona announced that they would sign midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer, and many expect that more names will leave the Johan Cruyff arena.
It’s been reported that Hakim Ziyech will follow De Jong to the exit door and Matthijs de Ligt has been rumored to also be leaving in the summer. And now, de Ligt has his say on the potential move.
Here’s what de Ligt had to say:
“I think he [De Jong] had a great season. He deserves to sign for Barcelona,” De Ligt told Voetbal Primeur of De Jong.
“Play with him there? It would be good to play with Frenkie at a club, but in these moments I don’t know what will happen.”
“Has it been my last game at the Johan Cruyff Arena? I do not know yet,” De Ligt said after Ajax’s 4-1 win over De Graafschap.
“This is not the time to talk about my future. I don’t know if I will go with Frenkie de Jong [to Barcelona]. I still have to analyze things and see everything. We’ll see what happens.
“I cannot say anything. We’ll see at the end of the summer. There is nothing yet. There are conversations, but there is still no agreement. With who? The newspapers write, so choose one yourself.”
Ajax have completed the signing of defender Lisandro Martinez from Defensa y Justicia, which could pave the way for De Ligt’s sale.
On the other hand, Barcelona will be hoping that the additions of the two surprise Champions League stars will help their underperforming stars win the competition once again.
This could be a huge blow for Manchester United as their pursuit to strengthen their defense will get difficult. So, it’d be interesting to see what’s in store for the prodigious Dutch defender.
Barcelona have been busy in recent years trying to freshen up their centre backs with Gerard Pique now 32 and Samuel Umtiti ridden with injuries.
De Ligt could be their first choice centre back for the next 15 years and already has an impressive body of work behind him after this year’s Champions League campaign.
