‘ I was born for this’ – Romelu Lukaku proud of matching Belgium goalscoring record

Romelu Lukaku has written himself into Belgian football history by, becoming the national team’s joint-top scorer of all time.

After his brace against Mexico, Romelu Lukaku drew level with Paul Van Himst and Bernard Voorhoof with 30 goals for his country, Belgium. He may have hit a rut at club level, but the striker stands on the brink of a milestone for his nation ahead of a friendly with Japan in midweek on Tuesday.

The Manchester United striker scored twice as Roberto Martinez’s side were held 3-3 in Friday’s friendly, his second salvaging the draw after Hirving Lozano’s four-minute double put Mexico ahead. Despite that, Belgium’s injury-hit defense was exposed by Mexico’s Hirving Lozano, who scored a quick-fire double in the second-half to put his side in front.

Lukaku was impressed with Saturday’s opponents and believes if they can replicate the form they showed against Belgium, they will pose a threat at the World Cup. “I knew they were a good team and I knew they had a lot of individual talent. I think they’re a really good team and if they perform like that, they’ll be very dangerous for a lot of teams at the World Cup.”

He further added “I was born for this. I just want to score as many goals as possible. “I’m glad I matched the record. I knew I’d do it. I want to break the record before 2018. “But I really hope that this generation wins something. I want to get a trophy for this country.”

After Manchester United’s flying goalscoring start in the Premier League this season where they beat teams easily and seemed to be able to score at will with a few 4-0 victories over their opponents, including the games against Swansea, West Ham United with Lukaku also being on the score sheet for them in these games. Lukaku scored 7 times in United’s first seven games in the Premier League this season but hasn’t been able to score in the last 4 games and due to his dip in form and inability to score, even United have found it difficult to find the back of the net with just 2 goals in the last 4 games.

Author’s take:

Romelo Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and when it comes to him, we tend to forget the fact that he is still just 24 years old. This is simply because he has been playing and scoring goals in the Premier League for such a long time and that is just a testament to his skill. At just 24, he has already matched his country’s all-time goalscoring record and will surely break it in the next few games.
