Jordi Alba makes a big statement regarding Leo Messi’s Contract in FC Barcelona

The Blaugrana left back wants new deal for Lionel Messi following his contract extension with the club on Monday.

Barcelona left back Jordi Alba on Monday signed a new deal with the La Liga table toppers ensuring his stay at the club until the end of the 2024 season. The Spanish International however harbours hopes of his dear friend and teammate Lionel Messi renewing his contract to keep playing with him as long as he stays at the club.

Messi has a current deal with the club running till June 2021 but Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has already held talks about extending his contract even more. Alba hopes Bartomeu lives up to his words in deciding to renew the contract for the greatest player in the world at the moment.

“He [Messi] makes you a much better player. By his side I have grown a lot, I have noticed the improvement. I have matured a lot as a player and as a person,” Alba said in the press conference following his contract extension on Monday.

”I hope Messi stays as long as I am here as we will all enjoy it. My goal now is to stay as long as possible and keep playing for Barca,” Alba added.

Speaking of his own new deal, Alba said “I’m very grateful to the club. I was in the youth team for eight years and I’ll be at the club for five more. I’m also grateful to my agents for the work they’ve always done, to my parents and my brother. In general, all my family, and especially my son and my wife, who give me support and which transmits itself onto the field of play. I’m at the best moment of my career. I’m really eager to keep winning with Barca.”

The 29 year old will turn his attention to Wednesday’s Champions League Round of 16 clash against Lyon. The tie is nicely poised for the return leg at the Nou Camp on Thursday after a goalless draw after the first leg in France. Alba is eager to keep Barca’s treble hopes alive but admitted the same being a difficult task to accomplish despite the fight shown by the club in all the three competitions so far.

“They’re difficult trophies to win, but obviously this is a team who have known each other for a long time. We’ll fight for every trophy. We keep competing in the same way,” Alba concluded.
