Indian commentator Sunil Gavaskar opened up on Team India’s decision to exclude Dinesh Karthik from the playing XI against the Pakistan cricket team.

The Indian batting great expected experienced wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik to feature in the playing XI. However, Rishabh Pant got the nod ahead of Karthik.

Gavaskar added that it was tough to understand the team management’s decision to drop Karthik, stating that it was a bit of surprise.

“Also dropping Dinesh Karthik, that was something that was hard to understand. Here, you have already identified him as a finisher and in this big match, you don’t have him on your team. So that was a bit of a surprise,” Gavaskar told India Today after India’s 5-wicket loss to Pakistan.

Gavaskar also spoke about Virat Kohli and added that the latter batted really well against Pakistan. The right-handed batsman scored a terrific half-century for India.

“We certainly have, he was middling the ball from the first ball he faced. There were a couple of terrific shots, the pull shot was the best of them all and even the flick for six to get to his fifty, there were some excellent shots,” Gavaskar added in a statement.
