IPL 2022: Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri stated that Hardik Pandya had difficulty accepting that he was released by the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. Hardik began his IPL career with MI in 2015.
He has five trophies with them, but he was not retained ahead of the mega auction. He eventually became the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT).
It surprised him that the Mumbai Indians did not retain him. It wasn’t easy. MI had Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Surya Kumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, so they had to choose three.
“Ishan Kishan was chosen in the auction,” Shastri said on commentary during the second One-Day International between England and India at Lord’s. Hardik led GT to victory in the inaugural season. They were the tournament’s most consistent team, finishing first in the points table with ten wins and four losses.
IPL 2022: When given responsibility, he’s a completely different cricketer – Ravi Shastri
According to Shastri, GT’s decision to give Hardik the role of captain was significant because the added responsibility made Hardik an even better cricketer. He was in charge of anchoring at No. 3 and chipped in with overs as needed.
“He was selected by the Gujarat Titans, where he was given the additional responsibility of captaining, which served him well. When he’s given responsibility, he’s a completely different cricketer than just batting and fielding,” he added.
Hardik Pandya’s journey with Mumbai Indians to Gujarat Titans
Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time IPL champions, stunned the cricketing world by not retaining Hardik Pandya and his brother Krunal Pandya in this year’s mega auction.
Both were identified with the Mumbai Indians and were associated with the team from the start of their IPL careers. The franchise decided not to keep Hardik because of his injury and poor performance for Team India in the T20 World Cup.
The IPL 2022 season was a comeback for the star all-rounder. Captain Hardik Pandya led Gujarat Titans to IPL victory in their inaugural season. Gujarat had signed Pandya for a whopping INR 15 crore and appointed him captain.
“He was selected by Gujarat Titans, where he was given the additional responsibility of captaining, which served him well. When given responsibility, he plays an entirely different game than just batting and fielding,” he continued.
Hardik became an essential player in white-ball cricket after winning the IPL 2022 final. The BCCI named him captain of the Indian team for the two-match T20 series against Ireland, and the team won the series 2-0 under his leadership.
