The inaugural IPL champions didn’t live up to the reputation in the IPL 2021 season. They finished seventh in the IPL 2021 points table. In fact, they lost more games than they won in the last season.
The Royals won 5 games but lost as many as 9 games under Sanju Samson’s captaincy. Meanwhile, the RR team management submitted the players’ retention list on Tuesday.
The Rajasthan Royals’ management retained three players ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. They retained their captain Sanju Samson for INR 14 crore. After that, they retained Yashasvi Jaiswal for INR 4 crore.
Last but not least, they retained talisman English wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler for INR 10 crores. The Royals have INR 62 crores left in their kitty and will look to sign the best players in the upcoming auction.
Meanwhile, RR Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara explained why they did not retain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer for the next season. The former Sri Lankan captain also spoke about the approach behind the retention.
IPL 2022: Kumar Sangakkara reveals the reason behind releasing Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer
“We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making this decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra’s long term injury forced us to retain only three.
“The idea behind going with these players was to have a strong core retained who also happen to form the leadership team at the Royals, while also giving us spending power in the auction.
“It was certainly a tough decision to make, but we are delighted to confirm that Sanju, Jos, and Yashasvi will be staying with us as the backbone of our team. We believe that this trio of explosive players are the best to take this team forward, and have the desired qualities that we are looking for in our players as we look forward to the next season.
“We would also like to thank all of the players for their efforts through the course of the previous seasons, and for always maintaining the Rajasthan Royals values,” the former Sri Lankan captain added in a statement.
Meanwhile, Sangakkara revealed why the team management let go of England internationals namely Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes. “We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making the decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players. However, the uncertainty surrounding Jofra’s long-term injury forced us to retain only three.”3
Rajasthan Royals will look to make a good impact in the next season. They are one of the teams that can surprise any team on their day. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in store for RR fans.
