IPL 2022 Retention: Kolkata Knight Riders Retentions, Players Missed, and Remaining Purse Value

IPL 2022 Retention: The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League next year will be very different from what we have seen in the last few years. BCCI has already added two new teams. Now, the other eight teams have released their list of players retained for the upcoming season.

The list came as a surprise for fans of most of the teams. Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli for a price cut. Players like David Warner, Rashid Khan, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya have been let go by their previous teams.

Kolkata Knight Riders have also released their list of players retained. The calls made by the Golden and Purple team have always been exciting. In the 2011 auction, the team released all their players and picked a team under Gautam Gambhir. Within the formation of the new team, KKR went on to win the IPL twice in four years.

In 2018, the team again released all the players and retained Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. They picked Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla, and Kuldeep Yadav using the Right to Match card. They could have used the same for Suryakumar Yadav, who Mumbai Indians picked for a price of INR 3.2 crores.

KKR has retained a total of four players for the upcoming season. The duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine has again been picked. Also, KKR retained Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer in the squad.

Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are two synonyms of Kolkata Knight Riders. It would have been pretty easy for the franchise to pick these two giants. Both Narine and Russell have been a part of the core group of last season’s runner-up.

Story of Andre Rusell and Sunil Narine

Russell has been a part of KKR since 2014 when the team picked him for a price of INR 60 lakh. In 2017, Russell was banned from IPL due to a doping-code violation. The team retained him for a price of INR 8.5 crores during the 2018 auction. Russell has delivered for KKR on several occasions in the past and is one of the key players for them.

He has made 1700 runs in 84 matches at an average of 29.31 and a strike rate of 178.57. Russell has made nine half-centuries. On the bowling front, he has picked 72 wickets at an average of 26.40, an economy of 9.04, and a strike rate of 17.51. The team has spent INR 12 crores to hold back Andre Russell.

KKR has spent INR six crores to retain Sunil Narine. The value of the spinner has decreased for the first time in IPL’s history. Until last season, KKR paid him INR 12.5 crores to play for them.

Narine has been a key player for KKR since the time he joined them back in 2012. He was one of the key architects behind KKR’s win in 2012 and 2014. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for KKR in the last season. Narine has picked 143 wickets in 134 matches at an average of 24.53, an economy of 6.74, and a strike rate of 21.82. While batting, Narine has made 954 runs at an average of 15.63 and a strike rate of 161.69.

Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakravarthy – Two New Knights in IPL 2022

Varun Chakravarthy has been a crucial player for KKR ever since he was signed up for a price of INR four crores in 2020. During the 2019 auction, KKR was adamant about picking him. However, Punjab Kings (fka Kings XI Punjab) spent INR 8.4 crores to have his services.

In a career of 31 matches, Chakravarthy has picked 36 wickets at an average of 23.30, an economy of 6.82, and a strike rate of 20.50. He has been the leading wicket-taker for KKR in the last two seasons. His performance in the IPL has allowed Varun to make his debut for the Indian Cricket Team. KKR has spent eight crores to have him in the squad.

The story of Venkatesh Iyer has been of no less than a fairytale. The cancellation of IPL 2021 midway came as a boon for him. KKR included him in the playing 11 during the UAE leg and asked him to open the innings. Iyer returned with numbers that are sure to turn heads. He was picked for the limited-overs series against New Zealand last month by the Indian selectors and made his debut in the first game.

In the ten matches during the UAE leg, he made 370 runs at an average of 41.11 and a strike rate of 128.47. He hit four half-centuries. Iyer was picked by KKR in the 2021 auction for a price of INR 20 lakh and has been retained for a price of INR eight crores. The reason behind his retention is simple; he understands the format. Iyer has already shown that he can play aggressively right from the first ball. If KKR is able to purchase the services of players with the same skillset as Iyer, the team is likely to become one of the strongest in the tournament.

Players Left by KKR in the Retention List

1. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is regarded as the next big thing in Indian Cricket. KKR picked him in the 2018 auction for a price of INR 1.8 crores. KKR was grooming him since his Under-19 days, and he was expected to be the next captain of the side. However, that might not be the case anymore.

Gill made 1417 runs in 58 matches at an average of 31.48 and a strike rate of 123. He was the leading run-scorer for the team in the last season. However, his strike rate was a major issue for the team during the entire tournament. He often failed to convert the starts and provided a slow start to the team.

2. Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan captained the KKR side in the last two seasons. Under his leadership, the team qualified to the final of the IPL 2021. Morgan is regarded as one of the smartest brains out there in international cricket. His captaincy records speak a lot about him; however, the same can’t be said regarding his batting records.

The only reason behind KKR leaving Morgan might be his inability to score runs for the team. The team might again pick him during the auction or try to find a new captain in the auction.

3. Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson was the KKR’s pace attack leader in the UAE during the 2021 IPL. He picked 13 wickets in eight matches at an average of 17.23 and an economy of 7.46.

However, Ferguson has been an injury-prone player right throughout his career. He sustained an injury during the 2021 T20 World Cup and was ruled out of the entire tournament. It might be the reason the KKR franchise did not pick him. Also, KKR will again have to build their pace attack right from scratch as there is no pacer in the retention list.

The purse amount left with KKR for the mega auction is INR 48 crores. A team can have a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 25 players in the squad. Also, a maximum of eight international players can be picked by a team in one season of the tournament.

KKR has retained two international players and hence will be eligible to pick six more in the auction. Also, the team can pick a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 21 players during the IPL 2022 mega auction.
