Meanwhile, some other important events are expected to take place before the start of the tournament. They are none other than the retention and auction of players. The mega IPL auction is expected to take place in January.
The retention process will happen today. Meanwhile, the teams, who want to retain their players, will have an opportunity to retain a maximum of four players with them. This means that such a combination could have 2 overseas cricketers at the most.
To put it in simple terms, three Indians and a foreign player would do the trick. In another case, two Indians and two foreign cricketers would also fit the bill. This is how the maximum of 4 players can be retained.
All the existing eight franchises have been asked to submit the list of retained players by today. Following the retention process, the two new teams – Ahmedabad and Lucknow will go about their business.
What about the two new franchises?
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad and Lucknow teams will get an opportunity to pick three players each. The two new franchises can pick a maximum of one overseas player only. The schedule for this will be from December 1 to December 25.
The new teams will be having a purse amount of 33 crores each for the same. It remains to be seen which cricketers are retained by their respective teams.
IPL 2022: When will IPL retention kick off?
The IPL retention process will go all guns blazing on November 30, 2021. It will commence at 5 PM IST. It remains to be seen which players will be available for the other two new franchises.

At what price will the cricketers be retained?
If a team retains 4 players. Then the division of cash will be – INR 16 crore for Player 1, INR 12 crore for Player 2, INR 8 crore for Player 3, and INR 6 crore for Player 4.
On the other hand, if the total number of retentions decreases to 3, then the money distribution will be INR 15 crore for Player 1, INR 11 crore for Player 2, and INR 7 crore for Player 3.
If a team opts to retain two cricketers, then the team needs to do so on INR 14 and 10 crores. On the other hand, the price of retaining only 1 player will be INR 14 crore.
