IPL 2022 RETENTION: Punjab Kings Retention list, Players missed in the list and Kitty left for Mega Auction

BETADDA

IPL 2022 retention: Punjab Kings was earlier referred to as “Kings XI Punjab”. Alike other teams, they too had top players at their disposal. However, they failed to make use of their resources to better effect.

They made it to the final only once in the IPL 2014 season but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final. It’s been a series of ups and downs for them as they didn’t get to taste true success in the competition.

Kings XI Punjab changed its name to ‘Punjab Kings’ in February 2021. Mohit Burman, one of the co-owners of the franchise, said that the idea behind the change of name is to “add a fresh look and fresh feel”.

However, change of name didn’t turn their luck as they remained the same in terms of performances. Punjab Kings finished sixth in the IPL 2021 points table. They will look to do better in the 15th edition.

IPL 2022 Retention: Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings are one of the three teams that are yet to win a trophy since the inaugural season. They are also the only team to retain only two players. On the other hand, other teams retained either three or four players.

1. Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal is one of the explosive batsmen in the shortest format of the game. The right-handed batsman slammed a century when he took charge as interim captain in the last season. Punjab Kings did the right thing to retain him for INR 12 crore (INR 14 crore deducted from purse).

2. Arshdeep Singh

Punjab Kings retained another promising youngster to strengthen the team. PBKS retained Arshdeep Singh for INR 4 crore. He has been pretty impressive for the franchise. He played 23 matches where he managed to take 30 wickets to his name.

Punjab Kings retention score: 6.5/10

Missed Players

1. KL Rahul

There were reports that KL Rahul will part ways with the franchise. It seems that KL Rahul made his stance clear. PBKS team management said they wanted to retain KL Rahul for the next season.

However, KL Rahul decided to go into the auction. “We wanted to retain KL Rahul, but he decided to go into the auction. We respect that, we honour that decision. It’s the player’s prerogative,” PBKS coach Anil Kumble said.

2. Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi played for India in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The youngster came through with flying colors as he became the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 17 dismissals. Punjab Kings didn’t retain him for this time around. He picked 12 wickets in IPL 2021 for Punjab Kings at an impressive economy rate of 6.38.

3. Eiden Markram

Eiden Markram is another player who fell out of Punjab Kings’ radar in the retention players’ list ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. The South African international was super impressive in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. It is certain that he will go for a bigger price tag in the upcoming mega auction.

Maximum and Minimum Players PBKS can buy in Mega Auction

According to the current rules, each Indian Premier League franchise is allowed to acquire a maximum of 25 players and a minimum of 18 players (domestic and overseas included).

So Punjab Kings team management has to buy a minimum of 14 players in the Mega Auction domestic and overseas included within the kitty leftover i.e. INR 72 Crore. They can buy a maximum of 21 players as per the rule mentioned.
