IPL 2022 Retention: Sunrisers Hyderabad Retentions, Players Missed, and Remaining Purse Value

BETADDA

IPL 2022 Retention: Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the newest teams in the IPL. The team was founded in 2012 after BCCI terminated Deccan Chargers from the tournament.

SRH made their debut in IPL in 2013 and made it to the playoffs. The team lost the eliminator game against Rajasthan Royals. During the 2014 mega auction, SRH retained only Shikhar Dhawan and Dale Steyn before the auction. The team picked 22 players in the auction, including David Warner.

In the 2014 and 2015 seasons, the team couldn’t qualify for the playoffs and finished in the sixth position in both seasons. Under the leadership of David Warner, SRH won the IPL in 2016. In 2018, the team again retained only two players and picked 23 players in the auction.

The 2021 season of the IPL was the worst in SRH’s history. The team won only three out of the 14 games and finished in the last position. The rift between David Warner and team management was out in public. The management didn’t even try to sort out the matter, and it indicated that the team might go through a complete revamp. It happened on Tuesday when SRH announced the names of players who will be a part of the squad for IPL 2022 Retention.

1. Kane Williamson (14 Crores)

The SRH franchise has picked Kane Williamson in the first position for IPL 2022 Retention, and he is likely to captain the side in the upcoming season.

Williamson was appointed the captain of the side during the India leg of the 2021 season. However, he couldn’t recreate what David Warner had achieved in the past with the team. Kane Williamson was appointed the captain during the 2018 season as well. Under his leadership, the team qualified to the final only to lose the match against Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets.

Williamson made 735 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.50 and a strike rate of 142.44. He won the orange cap for being the highest run-scorer in the tournament. Williamson is regarded as one of the best captains in modern-day cricket. Hence, he was given the first preference by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

2. Umran Malik (4 Crores)

Umran Malik came in as the replacement for T Natarajan last year. Previously, he was the net bowler for the franchise. Within a few months, he has become the second-most crucial player in the squad. Malik has played only a single first-class and List A-game. His first-class debut came against South Africa A while playing for India A on 23rd November.

He played only three games in IPL and picked two wickets. However, the cherry on the cake was his raw pace. In a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he bowled five consecutive deliveries with a speed of over 150 kmph.

3. Abdul Samad (4 Crores)

Sunrisers Hyderabad has also retained another uncapped player, Abdul Samad. Samad has been with the franchise since 2020. He has played 23 matches for SRH in the tournament and has made 222 runs at a strike rate of 146.05.

During the 2020 auction, SRH picked Samad for a price of four crores. It will be interesting to see how the team management builds a team around these three players.

1. Rashid Khan Not Picked by SRH in IPL 2022 Retention

Rashid Khan is someone who has been with the franchise since his early days. He picked 93 wickets in 76 matches at an average of 20.6 and an economy of 6.33.

The only reason why SRH failed to retain Rashid was the salary issue. It was reported that Rashid wanted to be SRH’s first choice, thereby earning INR 15 crores. However, the management was not ready to give him that contract. SRH was ready to give him second place, through which he would have received 11 crores. However, Rashid was not ready to accept this offer.

2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise since 2014. In 2018, he and David Warner were the only players that the team retained. However, the same has not happened in this season. The only reason SRH is not going with Bhuvi is that he has recently sustained a couple of injuries that have affected his bowling.

3. Jonny Bairstow Not Picked by SRH in IPL 2022 Retention

SRH picked Jonny Bairstow in the 2019 auction for a price of INR 2.2 crores from his base price of INR 1.5 crores. In the last three seasons, he made 1038 runs at an average of 41.52 and a strike rate of 142.19. Bairstow made one century and seven half-centuries for SRH during his time. There is no specific reason why SRH dropped Bairstow from their list. Hence, they might pick him up in the upcoming auction.
