IPL 2023: Recently, there were a number of rumours circulating about the IPL team Punjab Kings. Before the 2023 season, it was claimed that they were looking to replace their captain, Mayank Agarwal.
The franchise has since issued a statement denying all the rumours. Furthermore, they asserted that no official from the team had made such a claim. Following earlier speculations, Punjab Kings were expected to replace both Agarwal and head coach Anil Kumble.
As rumours circulated, it was said that the franchise had begun talks with a number of players. Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss, and a former Indian coach were among those there.
The reason behind Punjab hiring for the position, according to those reports, was because they were planning to fire Anil Kumble. This was brought on by the IPL 2022’s most recent season, which was yet another letdown. Despite having a strong start, Punjab Kings placed sixth in the points standings.

IPL 2023: Punjab Kings Refute Claims That Mayank Agarwal Has Been Relieved of His Captaincy
Before the IPL 2022 season started, the franchise added a few top players to the roster. It goes without saying that the arrival of players like Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan will always be impressive.
They tried everything, but nothing worked to improve their situation. According to an article in Inside Sport, Jonny Bairstow was being lined up to be named as the team’s captain. Moreover, the article claimed they would advise Mayank Agarwal to focus on his batting.
The Punjab Kings franchise, however, blatantly stated in its note that such reports are untrue. Moreover, no team personnel have remarked on a potential change in captaincy.
“News report published by a certain sports News Website pertaining to captaincy of the Punjab Kings franchise has been making the rounds in the last few days. We would like to state that no team official has issued any statement on the same,” read the PBKS statement.
The speculation regarding Anil Kumble’s firing, meanwhile, wasn’t denied by Punjab Kings in their statement. This supports the idea that a new head coach might be chosen before the upcoming new season.
Notably, Mayank Agarwal was hired after India’s top-order batsman KL Rahul resigned as captain. Rahul also severed ways with the team prior to the IPL 2022 auction and excelled as Lucknow’s captain.
Mayank Agarwal, meanwhile, fluctuated in form all season and was unable to help the team qualify for the playoffs. Despite being the opener, Mayank frequently chose to bat lower in the order. However, he still managed to score 196 runs in 13 games at an average of 16.33.
