La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas Medrano (age 57) has never stepped back to do anything and everything required for the betterment of Spanish football. He has worked hard for the brand as a whole and he has now gone ahead. He recently admitted that he would like to see Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo returning back to La Liga in the future.
The Portuguese player-manager duo Ronaldo and Mourinho are by far the most marketable and controversial people in world football. Both of them did wonders with Real Madrid in La Liga. Javier Tebas Medrano intends for Mourinho to take up the national team role and for Ronaldo to once again play in Spain.
During an interview with Canal11(broadcasting television network), Tebas said, “I would like to have Cristiano Ronaldo back and for Jose Mourinho to be coaching a Spanish team. He’s a great coach and a great name to promote our league.”
Javier Tebas Medrano’s thoughts on Ronaldo leaving Madrid
In a recent interview, he revealed that he does not believe Ronaldo’s departure affected La Liga’s popularity much. Tebas said, “I thought that his departure would affect us more, to be honest. However, I prefer the Spanish league with Ronaldo in it than without. The Premier League for many years had no Ballon d’Or winners but was still the best league in the world. That’s a great job on many levels.
Ronaldo’s battle with Barcelona star Lionel Messi helped to make La Liga intriguing. It increased the viewing of a global audience for the best part of a decade.
Two great icons are now playing in different domestic stages. Tebas believes that has done little to dampen the interest in his product.
Javier Tebas Medrano on Lionel Messi
La Liga president Javier Tebas has called Lionel Messi the “heritage of La Liga”. He said the Barcelona icon is essential to Spain’s top division.
Ronaldo ended a nine-year stay with Real Madrid to join Juventus last summer. Neymar made a world-record move from Barca to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.
Messi, however, has played his entire professional career at the Camp Nou. Tebas told Marca about the relation of the Barcelona icon with the league and fans. In a recent interview question about Neymar’s return were also asked, he said, “Yes, of course [I’d like Neymar to return]. With his qualities, he’s in the top three players in the world. It would be very important for La Liga if he came again, although it wouldn’t be defining for the Spanish league. The defining thing is that we play 10 months a year, with 20 clubs each playing each other and generating passion and joy each weekend for fans in Spain and across the world.”
He further added, “A player like Neymar gives you a following in countries that look out for him, but he’s not an essential element, not even Cristiano Ronaldo was. Lionel Messi, on the other hand, is an essential element because he’s the heritage of La Liga.”
Javier Tebas Medrano on a Super League
The concept of a Super League has been widely discussed in the UEFA headquarters in recent years. It suggests the creation of new continental club competition which perhaps replaces the Champions League.
Tebas has helped to establish La Liga as one of the leading divisions on the planet. He insists he opposed the creation of a Super League that could take the likes of Barca and Real Madrid elsewhere.
Tebas said, “We’re totally against it. It has a different format than the Champions League and it would make the competition practically closed. The format would kill the competition. Economic interests would only serve the biggest clubs, at a time when we’re trying to promote competitiveness.”
