Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to offer youngster Anthony Martial to Real Madrid in order to lure Gareth Bale to Old Trafford, according to reports.
According to reports in Spanish outlet Don Balon, a big transfer story may be brewing this summer, with Man Utd boss Mourinho desperate to land the signature of Real winger Gareth Bale.
It is said that Bale, 3-time Champions League winner at Real, could be all set to leave the Bernabeu in this summer. The latter part of his Spanish sojourn has been riddled with injuries. The Welshman has only made 19 appearances this season, after only making 27 last season.
After scoring the winner in the Champions League final in his first season, things have not gone Bale’s way in Madrid
However, the Welshman, PFA Player of the Year in 2012-13, is a player of undoubted pedigree. Man Utd have held an interest in him since long, after having had a then world-record bid rejected in 2013 before Bale eventually went to Real Madrid.
It seems that the Red Devils might finally have their chance to get their man this summer. If these reports are to be believed, they may be willing to swap French winger Martial for Bale. Martial is said to have “lost prominence” in the United set-up, with winter signing Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford preferred.
Martial has found himself himself in and out of the starting lineup, despite having a highly improved third season at Old Trafford. The ex-Monaco forward has scored 9 goals and 5 assists in 26 league appearances this term, after having a 2016-17 season riddled with personal issues.
His cause has not been furthered by a recent thigh injury, though the 22-year-old is back in time for United’s derby clash against Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Man Utd lie 16 points behind cross-town rivals City in second place, with 7 games to go in the season. A victory on Saturday will officially seal the title for City. Meanwhile, Bale and Real Madrid will be preparing for a Champions League quarter-final clash against Italian giants Juventus on Tuesday night, as their hopes of defending their domestic crown remain all but over.
Author’s Take –
Personally, I feel if this move was to materialize, it would be a disastrous swap for Man Utd. Although Bale is certainly world-class on his day, his days have become fewer and fewer in the recent past. His career has been blighted by injuries, and given the wage packet he would also command, the ex-Spurs star would represent an immensely risky investment.
On the other hand, they have Martial, a supremely talented youngster who has done very well in whatever opportunities he’s got. Martial has the potential to become a future Ballon d’Or winner, and I think that Mourinho should put faith in him. Only 22-years-old, the Frenchman is revered by the Old Trafford faithful, and any deal involving him going the other way would certainly not be received well.
