The 28-year-old rejected a move to Hertha Berlin last year in January after Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay. But it seems like the midfielder will finally move as Arsenal will undergo a complete rebuild.
Xhaka moved to Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, with the Gunners playing around €35 million for his services. He has 220 appearances for Arsenal, winning two FA Cups and two Community Shields during this time.
AS Roma linked with Xhaka
Roma’s new manager Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his squad with Premier League stars to achieve Serie A success. Granit Xhaka is one of many on Mourinho’s list, which includes Nemanja Matic and Sergio Romero. The Portuguese want to make AS Roma a powerhouse in Italian football again.
Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the Swiss International, with the Portuguese attempting to sign the Basel-born star on several occasions. Jose praised Xhaka’s leadership skills two years ago and landing Xhaka would be a dream come true.
“Granit Xhaka is the main man in the entire Arsenal midfield, you can’t see it unless I lend you one of my eyes. Arsenal appears lost without him. He is a leader. Remember, mistakes are made by humans.”
The 28-year-old made 33 Premier League appearances during the 2020/21 season. While the midfielder comes in for a lot of abuse from fans, Xhaka enjoyed a strong season. He was also named in the Premier League Best XI of the Season by CIES Football Observatory.
It is reported that Roma’s initial offer of €13million has been rejected by Arsenal, who are holding out for closer to €20 million. Roma has reportedly not given up and is taking it in, planning to return with a higher bid. The Giallorossi might try to sweeten the deal by swapping Diawara and offering more money. The youngster has been a long-term target of Arsenal and they were keen on him before they signed Thomas Partey.
Xhaka’s future could be resolved in the coming weeks. Currently, the Switzerland captain is only focusing on leading his country at the Euros. The Defensive midfielder will want to make up for a poor season at Arsenal by having a successful tournament, that could raise his chances of moving further.
Arsenal plans for Summer window
The Gunners will be undergoing an extensive rebuild if they are to challenge next season. The money used from Xhaka’s sale will contribute towards the €70 million Arsenal needs to sign Emi Buendia from Norwich and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma. The Gunner’s main target is Martin Odegaard, if the move fails they have no option but to go after Buendia.
Manager Mikel Arteta will be under immense pressure to deliver results in the next campaign. With the Gunners finishing 8th season and without European football for the first time since the 1995-96 season. Arsenal fans are disappointed and will be hoping to see improvement from their team in the next season.
