Spanish midfielder Juan Mata, who currently plays for Manchester United is on the verge of being sold by Jose Mourinho, the new manager of the club. Mourinho had his own reason to dislike Mata during his time in Chelsea and sold the player to the Red Devils back in 2013. Mata is well known for his creative qualities including vision and passing. He has scored more goals with direct free-kicks at United and is one of the main free-kick takers in the team along with Wayne Rooney. His strong areas include through balls and taking set pieces. Despite all these qualities, Mata is weak in defensive contribution.
During Van Gaal’s time, Mata played at more than 1 position which was discussed mainly among fans. The perfect position for Mata is Central Attacking Midfield role, but Van Gaal used the player at right wing at many occasions. But since Van Gaal was a coach who like versatile players, Mata was a consistent starter in the team.
The link up play between Mata and Rooney, Mata and Rashford was brilliant in last season but since Rooney is lacking pace as years go by, it is a doubt that how long Mourinho can include both Rooney and Mata in the same team. But Since Jose Mourinho has said that Rooney won’t be assured a place in the team just because of club captain policy, this ensures Mata a chance.
Mata played for Chelsea from 2011 to 2013 & then joined Manchester United in 2013 and since then he has been very much creative with goals and assists. At Chelsea he scored around 33 goals from 135 appearances, but since joining United he has netted in 26 goals from 104 appearances. Comparison of Mata’s performance at both Chelsea and United are almost the same in terms of goal count. And in that means, 28 year old midfielder still deserve a chance to prove his worth in United.
At Chelsea, Mourinho described Mata as a player without any defensive contribution and was sold to United, but now in United when these two meet each other, fans expect Mourinho to keep Juan Mata as he is one of the fan favourites in the team. Moreover, United are pretty much strong side in defensive manner which may allow Mata to play in his normal style.
On the other hand, if Mourinho decides to sell Juan Mata in this window, that would definitely, affect the manager in fan support. Mata deserve a chance to prove his value atleast till December and may be then Mourinho can decide on the player’s future.
Spanish trio David De Gea, Ander Herrera & Juan Mata are always seen together during off season and training time. And if any one of them leaves the club which is still a doubtful case, may be that can affect other players in general. Last season De Gea was to leave United for Real Madrid if the last minute deal had went through & it was reported that De Gea could easily adopt to the situation because of having Spanish players in company.
Apart from all these, Mata is one of the main fan favourites right now at Manchester United despite the likes of Wayne Rooney and De Gea. And just because of this one reason, Mata should be allowed to stay at United for one season atleast and fight for his place in Mourinho’s team thereby restoring faith in the manager. In the end, we all know it’s upto the manager and coaching staff to decide whether a player should stay or leave. But for such a creative player like Juan Mata, United should keep him for the upcoming season.
