The PSG superstar has the world at his very feet and making the Ballon d’Or list is just one of his achievements, but Kylian Mbappe has revealed just why Messi and Ronaldo won’t win this year.
Kylian Mbappe has been impeccable ever since his incredible breakout season for AS Monaco, where the then 18-year-old was an incredible cog in Leonardo Jardim. He finished the season with 21 goals and a further 14 assists, which are outstanding statistics for any player in the world, but for a teenager, it’s off the charts. However, a move to PSG beckoned and Mbappe made the move becoming the second most expensive player behind team-mate Neymar.
At PSG, he became even better and was instrumental last season, winning his second Ligue 1 title, while helping PSG re-dominate France. In the process, however, the youngster has gone on to score 21 goals and create a further 17 assists for his attacking partners. That combined with his incredible performance in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has sent him name and popularity into the stratosphere, with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona eyeing a move for him.
His exploits, however, have earned him a place on the Ballon d’Or’s list of nominees alongside the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Luka Modric and a few others. Both Ronaldo and Modric are favourites to win the award, with the two playing a crucial part in Real Madrid winning their third Champions League trophy.
But despite that, the PSG superstar has revealed that both Ronaldo and Messi will not win the individual award this season, going on to say “Nobody is doing better at the moment and we can’t say it’s the end of their era because it will only end when somebody else does better than them. I don’t think one of them will win the Ballon d’Or this year because it was a World Cup year, and the World Cup takes precedence.
But if you take the player in the purest form, there’s nobody better yet. This year they were again the best two. Messi finished the best goalscorer in Europe; Ronaldo was the top scorer in the Champions League.”
Kylian Mbappe may not win the Ballon d’Or this season, but in all likelihood, the Frenchman will win it one day, if he keeps moving forward at this rate. He may also be right about neither Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo walking away with the trophy this season, especially with Luka Modric performing at his very best.
