La Liga chief Javier Tebas slams Barcelona superstar for his antics

La Liga President Javier Tebas has criticised Gerard Pique for his controversial celebration against Espanyol on Sunday.

The Spaniard has yet again, landed himself in hot waters, this time due to an objectionable goal celebration. Barcelona made the short trip to neighbours Espanyol who were leading the game until the 81st minute. Up stepped Gerard Pique to bury home a powerful header courtesy of a Messi free kick. However, what transpired next, left the fans in shock.

Pique has been criticized heavily for his controversial celebration against Espanyol.

The 32-year-old defender put a finger on his lips, mocking the home crowd. He has a long-standing rivalry with the Espanyol faithful and was whistled for the remainder of the game. Pique’s celebration didn’t go down well with the hosts and he has been slammed for his antics by the La Liga chief.

Primera Division president Javier Tebas blasts Pique

Tebas has hinted that he may be forced to hand the defender a three-game ban, while he has condemned the provocative incident. He said,”Pique cannot be making those sorts of gestures. We have seen the consequences of them and he is aware of this too, and before the goal, we did not hear insults towards the player.”

To score a goal should be a fantastic moment but his provocation meant people then reacted, and sometimes it is the player’s responsibility to avoid these insults,” Tebas said. While the former World Cup winner termed the equalizer ‘special’, it is believed that he could be punished for inciting the home crowd.

The Liga chief further added,”We do not like to hear players being abused of course but fans should not be provoked, and if his actions are punishable or not, that will be decided by a committee. It is not me who makes these sorts of rulings.”

If Pique does pick up a ban, he will be forced to sit out the Catalans’ next three fixtures. The Blaugrana play Getafe, Eibar and Girona up next in the Primera Divison. Barcelona will also play Chelsea in the Champions League, however, the Spaniard is already out of contention for that game, due to an injury sustained on Sunday.

Author’s Take

Needless to say that Pique should have been a little careful. He is a fiery character and his actions are set to fire back at him. There’s no need of provocating such issues when Barcelona are playing so well. This is not the first incident when the Spaniard has caused controversy with his antics.
