The Chelsea boss has got to find a solution to the field Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech both in the same team. More so after the Moroccan star spoke about his preferred position as a number ten.
Hakim Ziyech is in line to make his first Premier League start against Manchester United after suffering a knee injury in pre-season. He has made substitute appearances in two consecutive games before this weekend.
The 27-year-old fitness is set to give a selection headache to Frank Lampard. He has to figure out now the best position for both Havertz and Ziyech for this pivotal clash.
With the possibility of him starting the Saturday game, Ziyech has opened up on the role he would like to take in the team. He spoke on the same in the pre-match build-up.
Ziyech declares his role
Ziyech has announced his availability to play in a number ten role. The Moroccan believes he can be an instrumental figure from that region of the pitch. He will act as the main source of creativity.
“I still do, I still do [play in the number ten role],” Ziyech said. “Even though I didn’t play there a lot in the last two years. But I know for myself what I am capable of, even if it’s number ten, on the right or the left.”
Ziyech played normally as a left midfielder for his previous club, Ajax. But he did drift inside to create goalscoring chances. Although, it isn’t a pure number ten role he used to play there.
However, Ziyech feels he’s ready to switch to that role. “It doesn’t change for me a lot. I just see the way of the game. The way of the game for me is the same, either in the number ten, right or left. It doesn’t change a lot for me.”
Lampard has a selection dilemma
Lampard has gone for a 4-2-3-1 formation in almost every game this season till now. He has deployed Kai Havertz either behind Werner or Tammy Abraham in the number ten role.
Indeed, Havertz hasn’t quite found his feet in the Premier League. He has also been accused of losing too many balls in the midfield, some even in dangerous positions.
But he remains a key player in the starting eleven for Chelsea. Now, Ziyech is competing for the role and he’s very positive about it. Lampard had got to figure out a way because dropping either of them won’t work for sure.
The summer signing is also unfazed by the new arrivals and the increase in competition for his place. Ziyech says it will help all of them to work harder and push for a fight for each game.
