Chelsea boss is keen to see young Billy Gilmour’s return to his midfield in search of better tactics.
Frank Lampard and Chelsea are having tough times as 2021 is not going well for the Blues. The loss to Manchester City has attracted enough critics to Stamford Bridge and the management is concerned after a record-breaking incoming in the summer transfer window.
Lampard has got issues with the midfield lineup. Kovacic-Kante duo is not reaching upto the mark and struggling for possession in the centre circle is exposing the backline of Chelsea.
Man City clash has displayed this as Kante’s attacking visits left gaps between midfield and defensive line. On high pressures, Lampard has got multiple options to experiment with the midfield formation.
Chelsea academy graduate Billy Gilmour is one of them that Lampard can try in the restructuring process. The 19-year-old Scottish midfielder has got 6 games in a Chelsea shirt with a goal (Transfermarkt). He featured in a couple of champions league fixture of blues last season. But he didn’t make it up to a premier league start.
Looking for Another Launchpad

Last season, after getting a call to the senior team he got a chance to show up in FA Cup fifth-round fixture against toppers Liverpool. Gilmour made use of the chance and Chelsea won the game with a scoreline of 2-0. He won the man of the match award that night and later he picked up for Everton fixture in the following game.
But national lockdown due to pandemic has affected the continuity of his form. After months without football, he got only 13 minutes in four matches after the project restart. But another 80-minute showdown was effective for him in the away fixture against Crystal Palace. A knee injury took him out of the field and suspended him for another five months.
Now, Gilmour has regained the fitness and looking forward to a chance in this tough time. He came into the field at the last minute as a substitute in the UCL fixture against Sevilla last month.
Premier league start is the dream of the teenager and he is near to it. The 26 minutes on the ground in the City defeat was attracted some of the fans and obviously seeks the attention of his boss as per Football London.
The future of Chelsea midfielders
Billy Gilmour is quite quick and vigilant than Italian Jorginho. He can take possession in the centre-half which allows Kante to cover up the spaces. Also, it will allow Mason Mount to go wide with all three frontlines.
The Sunday fixture against Morcambe in the FA Cup will open up a channel for Gilmour as per the talks. Lampard will look into the midfield trio on behalf of the Man City defeat. Expecting the luck factor of last season, the FA cup fixture is a perfect stage for Gilmour for a re-launch.
If he can make an impact, a Premier League start is not away from the reach for the Scottish future. Also, it is needed for him to raise a claim to the national team call for the upcoming Euro Cup that postponed due to a pandemic. Chelsea has spent a lot with the summer window and Lampard has got a handful of talents. Now, all they need is the result and titles.
