Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed that he is hoping that teenage wonder-kid Callum Hudson Odoi signs a new contract extension with the Blues to keep the interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at bay.
The West London outfit finished in third place in the Premier League table and also won the Europa League in Maurizio Sarri’s one and only season in charge of the club. But the Italian decided to return to coaching in his native and left the job vacant at Stamford Bridge.
A familiar face returned to Chelsea in the form of Frank Lampard after the 41-year-old spent one season with Derby County and now has a big task on his hands. Chelsea has been hit with a transfer ban which does not allow them to sign any players for the next two transfer windows and that is almost an entire year.
The Blues have already tied down Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus Cheek on five-year contract extensions at Stamford Bridge and are hoping the same with Callum Hudson Odoi over the next few weeks. The 18-year-old winger has just one more year left on his current deal with Chelsea and is the subject of interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Lampard made it quite clear that he wants the English talent to remain at the club as he wants to work with Hudson Odoi and try to groom the academy product. The Blues boss delivered his verdict on Hudson Odoi and stated that he could become a big player for Chelsea in the future, “With Callum, of course, I want him to sign and stay here, I said it before I came, just generally, I said it when I first got here.
He is a player that has come through the academy, a player that I think can be a big player for Chelsea and for England. We as a club want him to stay, for sure. I think he knows he has a manager here who wants to work with him to improve, and that takes hard work. Nothing is given, especially when you’re 18 years of age, but with all the attributes Callum has we want him to come through at Chelsea and be a big player for us now and in the future.”
Hudson Odoi needs to develop his game over the next season or so and should sign his contract extension with Chelsea because he can get regular football now that the Blues are in need of quality attackers. Bayern Munich may not give the teenage superstar a great chance and keep him happy with too much competition for a starting berth at the Allianz Arena.
