Chelsea returned back to winning ways as they defeated Morecambe by four goals to nil to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup. The third-round match was played at the home of the London giant’s, Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard took absolutely no chances with the team and fielded a strong side which included the likes of Mason Mount and Kai Havertz. Hakim Ziyech returned to the starting lineup after being sidelined with a hamstring injury since December.
Kepa Arrizabalaga too got a rare start in the team. His last involvement came in the UEFA Champions League match against Krasnodar. Mason Mount opened the scoring for Chelsea with a thumping strike from outside the box to give them the lead.
The two German internationals combined to give Chelsea the second goal. Hakim Ziyech floated in a lovely ball into the penalty box towards Kai Havertz who headed the ball in Werner’s direction. Timo Werner just had to guide the ball in and that he did.
The third goal came in via yet another Hakim Ziyech assist who this time found Callum Hudson Odoi with a lovely flighted delivery. Hudson Odoi calmly collected the ball and slotted it in past the goalkeeper.
The final goal came after some beautiful dribbling from Tammy Abraham who freed Cesar Azpillecueta on the right-wing. Azpillecueta delivered a nice delivery and it was headed in by Kai Havertz who got a well-deserved goal in the end.
Frank Lampard praises Callum Hudson Odoi and Billy Gilmour
Billy Gilmour returned to the starting line up for Chelsea after a long time. The young English international is trusted a lot by Frank Lampard and has a lot of potential which was evident by his first performance against Liverpool wherein he was the man of the match.
Lampard believes that Billy Gilmour and Callum Hudson Odoi will soon guarantee themselves a spot in the first team if they continue training and playing like the way they currently are. Hudson Odoi registered yet another goal after he had scored against Manchester City.
Callum Hudson Odoi is a bright talent who has a great future ahead of him. He attracted the likes of Bayern Munich who were desperate to bring the English winger to the Allianz Arena.
Frank Lampard spoke highly about Callum Hudson Odoi and he’s extremely happy with his performances: “Callum is playing well and improving. He has improved and there’s much more to come from him.”
“But I think his application in training, his desire to look at his game, goals like today are a fantastic example. In terms of how long until he makes that case [for a consistent run in the team]? He’s making it now.”
Lampard suggested that both of the youngsters might just get more playing time if they continue with their training and displays on the field.
“I think Billy is pushing [for a regular run in the first-team] and has been since he made his breakthrough last season against top-level opposition,” Lampard said.
“His injury came soon after that but from those moments I knew Billy would be a very, very good player for this club, to say the least. Today, he came in, his attitude was good, he moved the ball well. When you talk about the academy players, people talk about the youth of this squad.”
