Barcelona offloaded a number of players in the January transfer window and Messi has been reported as the reason behind the exit of one them.
The Catalans took full advantage of the January transfer window by signing Coutinho and Yerry Mina. The board also allowed the number fringe players to leave the club in order to maintain the balance in the revenue system.
La Masia’s very own Gerard Deulofeu was one of the outgoing players as the Spaniard was sent on a short loan to Watford. The winger returned to Spain after impressing everyone during his loan stint at AC Milan. But he failed to impress Ernesto Valverde during his time at Camp Nou, starting just 7 games.
Lionel Messi behind Deulofeu’s loan move:
The recent reports from Diario Gol suggest that Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi was against the return of Deulofeu from the beginning. The Argentine was not a big fan of the winger’s selfish play and Leo, along with Suarez convinced the board to send the youngster on loan.
But the claims made in the reports are completely contrasting to Valverde’s comments about Deulofeu. “He has had chances to prove himself. It didn’t come out as he would have liked so we spoke to him and it was best for him to go out and enjoy more minutes.
Especially considering that there is a World Cup and that he can be an alternative. I am happy with him on a personal level for how he has been here.”
Excited for be part of @WatfordFC ! Say thanks for the welcome today. We are going to work hard in order to reach our objectives, starting today until the end of the season.🐝 pic.twitter.com/WkxerTr1sh

Another Barcelona flop, Aleix Vidal was also expected to leave the club in January. But his link-up with Lionel Messi and Suarez in the recent games kept him at the Camp Nou, at least for the next six months. The Spanish daily also reported that record Barcelona signing, Ousmane Dembele could face same problems at the club, once he is fully fit. The Frenchman’s style of play is also different than the one preferred by Barcelona and Lionel Messi.
The Catalans face Valencia in the first leg Copa Del Rey semi-finals today, with one eye on the Catalan Derby in La Liga on Sunday.
Lionel Messi is always at the center of every news in Barcelona and this case is no different. Deulofeu definitely struggled during his six months at the club but he has what it takes to be the next big thing. With a little more experience he will learn the art of precise passing and crossing and a loan move to Watford might help him with that.
