Ligue 1 giants set to sign City and Barcelona dream target

Despite his desire to play under Pep Guardiola, City will miss out on this Ajax midfielder to Paris-Saint-Germain.

The 21-year old Ajax starlet will leave this summer and is attracting interest from across Europe. Paris Saint-Germain are favourites to land the promising Frenkie de Jong. But Paris-Saint-Germain is reportedly the only side prepared to match Ajax’s £66million asking price. De Jong is set to leave Holland this summer, with Barcelona among the teams keen to prise him away from Ajax.

Manchester City are also in the market for the 21-year-old, who has scored four goals and picked up one assist this season and was seen as a potential long-term replacement for Fernandinho. The midfielder reportedly wants to play under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. But according to the reports, Pep Guardiola’s side are set to be beaten to his signature by PSG – despite the midfielder’s desire to move to England.

Reports claim the sought-after starlet would prefer to join City and play under Guardiola, but only PSG will match Ajax’s valuation for the player. Reports in Spain suggested a deal had already been struck between De Jong and the Ligue 1 giants.

There had been suggestions that he would be leaving the Johan Cruyff Arena this window but last week De Jong moved to confirm he will be staying with Ajax until the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

De Jong told Ajax’s Twitter account.

”I am 100 per cent staying until the summer. I am not leaving this winter. I don’t know what other people are doing, but personally, I would like it if the whole group stay together.”

Speaking last week, meanwhile, Guardiola admitted City will always struggle to keep pace with Europe’s biggest spenders. Guardiola said,

“I’m not talking about the case of the Ajax player because he is an Ajax player. But if you want one and many, many clubs want him it’s more complicated, especially if it’s Real Madrid or Barcelona.”

“Normally when you are involved with Madrid and Barcelona you are going to lose. You have to be quicker and more efficient. I’m making a statement in general about when many teams want a player that it’s more complicated.”

Author’s take:

The 21-year old Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong is interested in playing under Pep Guardiola but only Thomas Tuchel’s PSG are prepared to pay the midfielder’s asking price which is too high for City to spend. City are still waiting for the negotiations and PSG are known as European spenders and they are ready to make a move for Ajax starlet.
