Lionel Messi blocks move for Antoine Griezmann for Argentina star instead

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has blocked Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann’s move to Camp Nou and wants fellow Argentine star instead.

The 26-year-old French star has been linked with Barcelona ever since Neymar left the Camp Nou side during the summer transfer window, but has struggled for form this season. However, while Antoine Griezmann has struggled, it looks like Lionel Messi doesn’t want the Atletico star at the club and has instead recommended fellow Argentine Paulo Dybala.

The Argentine has been simply sublime for the Old Lady this season and is by quite a margin, one of their best players. The 24-year-old has been in sublime form for the Old Lady since his arrival from Palermo and has continued his form well into this season. With 14 goals in just 18 appearances for Juve, Paulo Dybala is their top scorer, five goals ahead of Gonzalo Higuain and is already on par to match his 19 goals best season for the Turin club.

However, with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and even PSG interested in the 24-year-old, it looks like Dybala gets the Lionel Messi seal of approval. According to reports from and Don Balon, the Argentine has been recommended to the Barcelona board instead of fellow La Liga star Antoine Griezmann by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

It further adds that while Barcelona has been chasing Griezmann for what feels like an eternity, the Barca number 10 doesn’t feel that the Frenchman’s skill set would help the team and thus the club would be spending €100 odd million for nothing. However, while it would be a big blow to the 26-year-old, this means that Manchester United are free to sign him but that would also mean losing out on Paulo Dybala.

Real Madrid also would be free to sign the free-scoring Frenchman, although they were interested in both Paulo Dybala and even Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi to replace the aging and struggling Karim Benzema. But in Griezmann, Los Blancos get one of the closest like for like replacements for the aging Cristiano Ronaldo and the struggling Gareth Bale within a €100 million.

Author’s take:

While Paulo Dybala would be absolutely perfect for Barcelona, the Argentine has already said before that he won’t join as long as Lionel Messi is at the club. The 24-year-old feels that with Lionel Messi already at the club, his achievements would go unnoticed, which is exactly how Neymar felt before leaving Barcelona.

But for Antoine Griezmann, this would a big blow especially since the Los Rojiblancos just brought in Diego Costa, which means they have a worthy replacement for him. Plus the fact that he really wanted to join Barcelona, means that he has to decide between the Premier League or Real Madrid.
