Lionel Messi news: The Argentine superstar’s eight-year streak of playing the full 90 minutes of the matches he had started in the Champions League ended during PSG’s 2-1 win over Juventus.
PSG began their Champions League 22/23 campaign with a win over Italian behemoths Juventus. Kylian Mbappe scored two goals inside the first 22 minutes to earn PSG all three points.
Mbappe broke the deadlock five minutes into the game before doubling PSG’s lead over the Serie A side in the 22nd minute.
Messi was in the PSG starting XI for the game and but did not feature for the entirety of the match.

According to Opta, that was the first team Messi was subbed off in a Champions League match that he had started in since October 21, 2014. Manager Christophe Galtier replaced the Argentine with Carlos Soler in the 84th minute of the match.
Messi had featured in 63 matches in which he played full 90 minutes during that period. The Argentine also won the Champions League once during that time.
Meanwhile, Messi joined PSG in the 2021 summer transfer window. He signed for PSG as a free agent after his contract with Barcelona expired. Messi wanted to continue at Barca, but the Catalan club was not able to table him in a new contract offer.
Messi joined PSG on a two-year contract with the option for a further year in 2021. The Argentine endured a relatively underwhelming first season at the French club.
Messi made a total of 34 appearances for PSG last season and only scored 11 goals – no mean feat but underwhelming by Messi’s standards. He, though, registered an impressive 15 assists.
Meanwhile, Messi and PSG have got off to a fine start to their 22/23 season. They began it with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Nantes in the Trophée des Champions final.
PSG have also had a stellar start to the Ligue 1 22/23 season. The defending champions have played six games so far in the league this season and have collected 16 points. PSG have won five of their matches and shared points in the other. The match in which they dropped points came against AS Monaco, who held them to a 1-1 draw.
PSG host Brest in their next game in Ligue 1 and they will be hoping to secure another victory.
