Lionel Messi news: Lyon’s assistant manager Ludovic Giuly has defended the Argentine for the rather underwhelming first season he had with the Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi joined PSG in the summer of 2021 after his contract with Barcelona had expired. He wanted to stay at Barcelona, and the Catalan outfit wanted to offer the Argentine a new contract. But it could not happen ’because of financial and structural obstacles.
Messi signed a two-year contract with an option for another year with PSG. However, Messi endured a relatively subpar first season at PSG.
He only scored 11 goals for PSG in the 2021/22 season – a no mean feat but certainly not remarkable in comparison with the high standards Messi had set over the years. Messi, though, did register an impressive 15 assists for PSG in that season.
Lionel Messi News: Ludovic Guily Defends Argentine’s ‘Complicated’ First Season at PSG
Guily said he knew Messi would have a complicated first season at PSG. He claimed that it is never easy to adapt to a new country and league even if you are the best footballer in the world.
“I always knew it would be complicated for him last season,” Giuly told Le Parisien. “When you were the king of the world in a club, and you arrive overnight in a new country and in another championship, it is never easy, even if you are the best player in the world.
He added: “It takes time to absorb the change, and we saw that his first year was complicated. But I was convinced that his second season would be good because the great players always question themselves; that’s what he did.”
Meanwhile, Messi has looked back to his best at PSG this season. The Argentine and PSG have got off to a stellar start to the 22/23 season.
PSG began their season by thrashing Nantes 4-0 in the Trophee des Champions final. Messi scored a goal in that game.
The Parisians then kicked off their Ligue 1 title defense with a thumping 5-0 win over Clermont Foot. Messi starred in that game, scoring two goals for PSG.
Messi has so far featured in 10 games for PSG this season and has scored five goals and provided eight assists.
PSG, meanwhile, sits on top of the Ligue 1 points table with 19 points from their first seven matches. They have won six of those while sharing points with AS Monaco in the other.
PSG also got their Champions League 22/23 campaign off to a winning start. They hosted Italian behemoths Juventus in their first game and secured a 2-1 win. PSG came up against Maccabi Haifa in their next game and cruised to a 3-1 victory. Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe scored for PSG in that game.
