The Barcelona ace has urged the club to go ahead and activate the release of this Sociedad right-back, seen as an upgrade to the unsettled Semedo
Lionel Messi has spotted a talented player in Real Sociedad’s Alvaro Odriozola. The Barcelona ace has subsequently urged the board to plot a move for him as a replacement for Nelson Semedo. The 22-year old has a €40 million release clause in his Sociedad contract and the Argentine ace feels its worth activating. Odriozola has drawn plaudits for his speed and buccaneering runs down the right flank and has also played starring roles for the Basque outfit since bursting on to the scene in 2016.
His meteoric rise saw him get promoted from the U-23 Spanish side to the senior team, when he was picked-up for the World Cup qualifiers in October last year. Odriozola would be seen as a replacement for the inconsistent Nelson Semedo, who hasn’t settled to life in Catalonia yet. Signed for €30 million from Portuguese side Benfica, the Portugal international has made only 17 appearances and hasn’t particularly impressed in any.
His stock hit an all-time low when he turned in an abject display in last weekend’s loss to Levante, as he was guilty of leaving too much space at the back and was found out consistently. That evening may have been enough to convince Barcelona, or perhaps Messi himself, to look for a new personnel in the right full-back position, and fortunately, didn’t have to look too far.
The issue is the interests of rivals Real Madrid and Manchester United, who were also reported to be pursuing the defender, back in February. But the sides may renew interest again in the summer.
Barcelona has had their fair share of issues at the right full-back position since the departure of Dani Alves in 2016. Sergi Roberto has produced impressive spells, but he isn’t an out-and-out right back. Nelson Semedo is, but he has proved to be very disappointing. Odriozola is the next bet in line, but only time will tell if they are getting third time lucky.
