The Reds are in need of a defensive reinforcement in the January transfer window after consecutive injury blows in the side. Liverpool has a number of injures in their defensive set-up, which could turn out into a bigger problem towards the end of the season.

The Dutchmen Virgil Van Dijk suffered an injury during the Merseyside derby courtesy of Pickford’s tackle. The rush tackle has sidelined Van Dijk out of the game for a year. The towering defender has been the wall for Liverpool’s defense and his absence at the back is a big blow for the Reds.

The Merseyside club did have a backup for Virgil Van Dijk with Joel Matip on the bench. Although, to make things worse Joe Gomez got himself injured, which made things a little worse for Klopp and Liverpool. In a title defending season, Liverpool might need to overcome this crisis.

Klopp and the club have a number of shortlists to sign in the January transfer window. The defensive reinforcements will be a must for Klopp in order to post a challenge for the title. Klopp’s side is currently at the top with 33 points amidst the recent loss against the Saints.

However, the loss didn’t affect Liverpool’s top spot in the Premier League table. Manchester United are right behind the Reds with the same 33 points from 16 games. United will be looking to clinch three points to enjoy the top position and lead Klopp’s side by three points.

According to Express

, Liverpool has been tipped to sign a reliable defender to come and help Klopp out until the end of the season. There are a number of defenders on the list, who could sign in favor of Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Alan Hutton’s advice to Liverpool Chief Edwards

Former Premier League right-back Hutton has told Liverpool chief Michael Edwards to splash out on a new defender. “I don’t think if you’re going to challenge for the title you can rely on young boys,” Hutton told Football Insider. “It’s good for them to come in and get experience but you need a main figure there.

“Fabinho’s does well at centre-back but I do think it’s a position where they’ll look to bring someone in to steady the ship, who can play most their games.

“Not necessarily a Van Dijk but someone who could come in and steady the ship and play most of the games until the big boys are back. Somebody you know is gonna come in and perform and be fit and probably ‘reliable’ is the key word.”

Three defenders in Liverpool Radar

Three defenders in Liverpool Radar: Ben White Ozan Kabak, and Sven Botman

There have been a number of players linked with a switch to Anfield in recent times. Klopp has been forced to play Brazilian Fabinho at the centre-back role due to injury blows. Joel Matip isn’t completely fit for the Reds, which puts Klopp in a position to play his holding midfielders at the back.

Liverpool’s last Premier League fixture against Southampton did feature the defensive pair of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as centre-halves. Jurgen Klopp might need a centre-back to fix their major issues at the back due to injuries. The Reds will need to spend funds in order to stay in the race.

Brighton star Ben White, Schalke ace Ozan Kabak, and Lille’s Sven Botman are the top targets in their list as per reports in England. Ozan Kabak is the defender, who has been linked with a move to Anfield for some time and Klopp will be happy to have such talent in his set-up.
