Ajax truly announced their reemergence in Europe by mauling Real Madrid on Tuesday night to send them packing from the Champions League, and one of their players has caught the attention of Liverpool fans
Ajax deservedly hogged all the headlines come Wednesday morning after thrashing a hapless Real Madrid 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night, sending the three-time defending champions crashing out of the Champions League. The Amsterdam giants were impressive enough in the first leg despite being beaten 2-1, and barely anyone gave them a chance to overturn the tie in the Spanish capital, despite the struggles of the La Liga giants.
And Ajax did end up tearing any scripts that were in play, appearing utterly rampant early on, with Dusan Tadic teeing up Hakim Ziyech for the opener, before the Serbian produced a fine turn and pass to set up David Neres for the second. Tadic himself rifled a strike into the top corner of the net to make it 3-0 in the second half, though Marco Asensio hauled Real back into the game with a left-footed effort.
Just when the whole world, and especially the home fans, wondered if Madrid could set up a tense finale, Lasse Schone sent a fabulous free-kick past Thibaut Courtois and into the net, securing a 4-1 win — with Nacho’s red card for Real in the dying moments of the match summing up the night.
As expected after such a result, there were a raft of Ajax players who managed to impress on the night, meaning they will surely be attracting interest from all corners of the continent come the end of the season, with playmaker Ziyech a prime candidate. The Moroccan international, 25, has been in otherworldly form ever since joining from FC Twente in 2016, notching 33 goals and 40 assists for the capital club.
One team surely in desperate need of a playmaker this summer is Liverpool, and Reds fans have been taking to Twitter to commend Ziyech’s performance from last night, instantly believing that he would be the ‘ideal’ replacement for Philippe Coutinho while urging the club to pay whatever it takes to sign him.
Ajax were just sensational last night, that everyone can agree upon. And that means that inevitably some big hitters will come calling for the clubs brightest lights at some point, so Liverpool fans showing their urgency and trying to get their club’s attention towards the player only makes sense. It remains to be seen how Ajax do in the quarterfinals, and if they do manage a semifinal appearance, then surely, the clubs best will be in the eye of all the elite clubs come summer time.
